Draw the wind rose diagram from the wind data obtained for Anytown Airport by
following the below steps –

1) With a scale of 1cm: 4 Knots draw concentric circles with wind velocities 10, 16, 21, 27
and >27 (say 32) knots.
2) With the help of protractor draw radial lines from centre of circle indicating the wind
directions from 10o to 360o.
3) From wind data table calculate the percentage of wind in the appropriate wind velocity
range and plot the percentage of wind data in the appropriate wind velocity range
segment and direction. Plus(+) symbols are used to indicate direction and speed
combinations which occurs less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the time.

For example, for the wind speed range of 11-16 Knots in 10 o direction calculate the
percentage of wind using the following formula.

Hourly observations of wind speed (Knots ) for each wind speed range
Percentage of wind = ∗100
Sum of total wind speed
247
= ∗100
77364
=0 . 3

4) Make a transparent template on which three parallel lines are plotted. The middle line
represents the runway centre line and the distance between it and each of the outside lines
is equal to the allowable cross wind component which is 13 knot for airport code BII.
5) Place the template on the wind rose diagram so that the middle line pass through the
centre of wind rose.
6) Using centre of wind rose as pivot, rotate the template until the sum of percentages of
winds between outside lines is maximum. Here at 270o the sum of percentages of winds is
maximum which is equal to 97.79%.
7) According to FAA standards, runways should be oriented so that aircraft may be landed
at least 95% of the time without exceeding the allowable cross winds. Here the sum of
percentage of wind is greater than 95% so a single runway is enough.
Therefore the orientation of the runway is along 270o for the given wind data. Based on
comparing with the runway orientation in problem 1, the airport in problem 1 is subjected
to large component of wind at right angle to the direction of travel so additional
crosswind runway is introduced but in problem 2 the percentage of wind exceeded the
95% minimum requirement as per FAA so single runway is suitable.
