Positive
Uses-Simple past
We use the simple past to express that something has ended
or been completed, and that the period of time in which it
happened has also ended. Sometimes it is confused with the
present perfect, but, unlike this, in the simple past the
distance between that moment in which what is narrated
happened and the current moment is clearly marked
Other uses of the simple past
Could, the past form of can, can indicate not only distance in
time, but also serves to mark another type of distance and
make a more formal and polite sentence
1. I made a delicious dinner

2. She wrote me a letter
3. He fixed my bike

Negative
4. I didn’t live in a flat last month

5. We didn’t have much money when I was a child

6. She didn’t listen to me at the last meeting

Uses-Past Continuos
The past continuous in English is used to:

1. Express actions or states that were taking place in the


past when another action or state interrupts or reinforces
it. For example:
I was walking when I saw an eagle (Estaba caminando
cuando vi un águila)
2. Offer context, that is, give information about facts or
situations in a specific time
Last year, I was studying for the exams (El año pasado,
estaba estudiando para los exámenes)
3. Mention two or more actions from the past that happened
at the same time

While my son was playing videogames, I was sleeping in


his bedroom (Mientras mi hijo estaba jugando
videojuegos, yo estaba durmiendo en su recámara)

1- He was playing the piano when the bell rang


2- Sofia was filming a new movie and a short film at the
same time

3- They were hunting without a license

Negative
4- She was not playing violin because she had a broken
hand
