1 1.35 g of CaCO3 was dissolved in HCl, and the solution was made to 500 ml with
distilled water. 50 ml of the above solution required 20 ml of EDTA solution on
titration. 50 ml of the hard water sample required 15 ml of the same solution on
titration. After boiling 50 ml of this water, cooling, and filtering, then 8 ml EDTA 10
solution was used on titration. Calculate the total, temporary and permanent hardness
of the water. Express the permanent hardness in ppm, oFr, and oCl units.

2 Alkalinity and water hardness are fairly similar, and essentially they both come from
sources in nature. Define the alkalinity of water. How do ions which cause alkalinity
and hardness get into water from natural sources? Briefly explain the acid-base 10
titration method to estimate alkalinity.
3 Give one example of a two-component system, where the two components do not
react with each other but mix in a molten state or solution. Draw the representative
phase diagram for that system and describe its key features. Calculate the degrees of 10
freedom when the state point lies on (i) the liquidus line and (ii) the eutectic point.

4 Suppose that you are camping in the winter. You have 20g of ice at -25 °C that you
need to melt and heat up so that you’ll have some drinking water at 20 °C. Make a
phase change diagram (heating curve) to indicate the changes water will undergo and
label each step. How much total heat in Joules is needed for completing the whole
process?

Liquid water Csp = 4 J/g/°C
Solid water Csp = 2.1 J/g/°C
ΔHfus = +/- 6.01 kJ/mol

5 Find the value of the standard free energy change and the equilibrium constant at 25
o
C for the following electrochemical cell:

Cu | Cu2+(1 M) || Ag+(1 M) | Ag 10
