MODULE 5 – RESULTANT OF CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEM IN SPACE

Description:

This module looks into the equivalent single force of two or more forces and its direction in three-
dimension.

Objectives:

After completing the module, the students are expected to:

1. Establish a better understanding of the components of the force in three-dimension.

2. Solve problems on resultant of Concurrent Force Systems in three-dimension.

Contents:

I. Force defined by its magnitude and the angles it makes with the coordinate axes.
II. Force defined by its magnitude and two points on its line of action.
III. Resultant of Concurrent Forces in Space

Discussion:

I. Force defined by its magnitude and the angles it makes with the coordinate axes.

Relationship between F and its components FX, FY and FZ:

Relationship between F and its components and the angles it makes with x, y, and z axes:

Fx = F cos θx

Fy = F cos θy

⚫ Angles θx, θy and θz are measured from the positive x, y and z axes respectively.
⚫ All the angles are adjacent to its respective axis, thus, cos is being use.

Problems:

1. A force of 500N forms angles of 60˚, 45˚ and 120˚ respectively with X, Y, and Z axes. Determine the
components Fx, Fy and Fz.
Figure:

Y 500 N

Solution:

Fx = F cos x Fy = F cos y
Fx = 500 cos 60 Fy = 500 cos 45
Fx = 250 N Fy = 353.55 N
Fz = Fcozz
Fz = 500 cos120
Fz = −250 N

2. A force F has the components Fx = 20 N, Fy = - 30 N, and Fz = 60 N. Determine the magnitude

of this force and the angles it forms with the coordinates.

Solution:

a. Magnitude of the force, F:

F 2 = Fx 2 + Fy 2 + Fz 2
F 2 = 20 2 + 30 2 + 60 2
F = 70 N

b. Angle it makes with the coordinate axes:

Fx Fy Fz

cos x = cos y = cos z =

x = 73.40 y = 115.38 z = 31

1 = cos 2 x + cos 2 y + cos 2 z

Checking: 1 = cos 2 73.40 + cos 2 115.38 + cos 2 31
