 Koreans will enjoy three days of rest in their routine. In 2022, Chuseok will be held from
September 9 to 12 by falling on a Saturday.

Why Chuseok is celebrated

 It commemorates the ancestors and is a date to spend as a family.
 The meaning of Chuseok (추석) comes from the Chinese 'Hangawi' (秋夕), which can be
translated as the great autumn afternoon, and it is so. It is a date marked on the
calendar of every Korean to spend it as a family.

How Chuseok is celebrated

 In the mornings on Chuseok Day, September 10, 2022, families gather to perform the
religious ritual on their ancestors, known as Charye (차례).
 This ritual consists of preparing and offering the ancestors special meals, which are
based on rice, rice cakes, meat, fruit, vegetables, and products of the area.
 Later the tombs of the ancestors of the family are visited, a ritual known as Seongmyo
(성묘), where each of the family members kneel before the tomb to offer their respects
to the ancestors.
 It is also a time to enjoy traditional Korean dishes, such as rice cakes, known as
songpyeon (송편)

Dress
 Hanbok (한복) are colorful, elegant and expressive garments that have been around for
more than 1,600 years. They have evolved a bit over time and remain a symbol of the
country's traditional culture and lifestyle.
 Materials and colors reflected social status: brighter colors and more expensive
materials were reserved for royalty and elite, while paler colors and cheaper materials
were for the common class.
 Today, hanboks are not generally used outside of special occasions, such as weddings or
Chuseok.
 For women, a petticoat is usually worn under the visible skirt which is called chima ( 치
마 ). For men, this is called baji ( 바지 ). Once wrapped, the end of the skirt should be
placed on the left side of the woman so that she can move and sit easily.
