Your TO: Deputy Marcelo Aranda chal LaJoye-Young FROM: Chief Deputy Lyndsie Cole DATE: September 2" 2022 REF: Termination of Employment INCIDENT (On 8/19/2022 you, Deputy Marcelo Aranda were returning home in your personal vehicle from Comerica Park with your wife and children after attending a Detroit Tiger’s Baseball game. While traveling West on 1-96 you encountered a driver that was exhibiting behavior that was consistent with that of an intoxicated motorist, You called 911, reported the driving to dispatch and then hung up. Following the 911 call, you became engaged in a road rage like incident with the suspected intoxicated driver. This incident was verified by an indopendent witness who also {identified you as the aggressive driver. While this incident was occurring, you attempted to initiate a traffic stop in your personal vehicle by tuning on your dome light, waving your badge at, and telling the other driver to pull over. This incident took place in Ingham County where you have no legal authority to take such actions, When the driver you were attempting to stop did not pull over, you proceeded to follow him into roadside rest area, You got out of your vehicle, approached the driver and became engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with him. During this altercation you proceed to assault him by pushing his head down below the plane of the steering wheel, punch him in the face and head area on multiple occasions, force his arm and ody back, and place him into a headlock. You admit thatthe last punch you delivered to his ‘mouth area caused a significant injury to the driver's lip. Additionally, you acknowledged that you were aware that the driver of the other vehicle was a paraplegic prior to you furthering ‘contact with him once he was removed from his vehicle. As a result ofthis incident, the driver was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was treated for several injuries as a result of this assault, A portion of this altercation as described was recorded by the other vehicles” passenger cell phone. During your investigative interview and following review of this recording, you initially admitted that you stood behind your actions. You also admitted in the interview that you lost your cool and were acting emotionally. Marcelo saved the day for sure. From: Erhardt, Timothy Sent: Wednesday, February 10, 2016 1:13 PM To: Devries,Jeffrey Subject: Marcelo lt, Here is what | would like sent to the Sheriff regarding the situation we talked about. Dear Sheriff, | would like to bring your attention to the actions of Deputy Marcelo Aranda on the night of, February 6th. As you know, | am assigned as the school resource officer for the Kenowa Hills schools. The 6th was the night of the school's mid-winter "Swirl" dance. I normally would have worked this event, but my wife had purchased some tickets to a fundraiser that my daughter is involved in. The school gave me permission to not work the dance. I was not comfortable leaving the school without a police presence during this event as the last dance we had, there was an MIP and a fight. ! contacted Deputy Aranda a few days prior to this date to verify that he was the township car on the night shift and he stated he was. | told hi about the school's situation, and he assured me that if time allowed, he would stop in and be visible. | followed up with an email to Sgt. Gerkin with the same request, and he also stated that if time allowed, he would permit an officer to stop by. I got a text from the school just after Marcelo arrived and they were thrilled just that he showed up. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Marcelo's timing could not have been more impeccable, While he was in the building, the DJ that the school contracted with to run the music for the dance became upset at the students because they stopped dancing to some song that they did not like. He advised them that if they did that again, he would pack up his ‘equipment and leave. Well, to teenagers, that is more like a challenge than a threat, so a short time later, he played another song and the students stopped dancing. True to his word, the DJ stopped playing music and started to pack up his stuff. Students and staff tried to talk him into staying, and Marcelo also spoke to him about this. He decided to start the music again and put his equipment back together. Unfortunately, the DJ's decisions left a very bad taste in the students’ mouths, as they were not sure how the night would continue to unfold, They had all taken time and money to get dressed up nice as kids do for these events, and now that was potentially going to be taken away from them. Staff members described the dance room an “extremely tense" even after he started playing music again. ‘This is where Marcelo went from doing good community policing work to doing AWESOME community policing work. The music was going, but the dancing was at a minimum as the students were very unsure of the situation. Marcelo then walked up to a few students, told them that they had to start dancing or he (the DJ) might pack up again. They seemed uncertain still, so Marcelo showed them! He was "cutting a rug” in full uniform (probably not as good as | would have, but he gave it his bestl). The students looked at him for just a few moments, then you could fee! the mood in the entire room change. The dancing exploded in the room and Marcelo was mobbed by students who were loving every moment of this. | was told that there were students who normally wouldn't give a police officer the time of day who had the biggest smiles on their faces of anyone! 1am sorry for the lengthy email, but | think this is a story that will make you smile, knowing your officers are out there not only working hard, but showing they are human as well. Deputy Tim Erhardt S-1do have a couple of videos of this incident if anyone ever wants to see theml! Sal Vitale It is with extreme pleasure that I present this Letter of Recognition to Deputy Marcelo Aranda, Deputy Ben Cammenga, Deputy Marnie Mills, Deputy Eric Smith, Deputy Pat Stewart, Deputy Beth VanStrien, and Sgt. Sal Vitale. On Thursday, July 25, 2013, Deputy Patrick Stewart responded to a business alarm at Belfor Property Restoration in Byron Center. Deputy Stewart found a 19 year old suspect inside the business who was trying to tum the alarm off at the key pad. The suspect also turned off the main power to the business. The suspect ran and Deputy Stewart was able to apprehend him after a foot pursuit and was able to prevent any property from being stolen from the business. A stolen cell phone was found in the suspeet’s pocket which was believed to have been taken from a car parked in a neighboring business parking lot. A combined effort by all deputies involved and a thorough investigation revealed that the 19 year old suspect was in town from Florida with his father and 14 year old brother and ‘were staying in their father’s semi-truck at the 76” Street Truck Stop. Deputy Marcelo Aranda located and interviewed the suspect's 14 year old brother which resulted in additional evidence that the suspect stole the cell phone and broke into another business in the industrial complex. Deputy VanStrien interviewed the suspect’s father and Deputy Smith interviewed the business owners. As a result of this team work and perseverance, Deputy Marcelo Aranda, Deputy Ben Cammenga, Deputy Marnie Mills, Deputy Eric Smith, Deputy Pat Stewart, Deputy Beth VanSttien, and Sgt. Sal Vitale had an intricate part in the apprehension and arrest of the breaking and entering suspect. It is, therefore, with great honor that I identify Deputy Marcelo Aranda, Deputy Ben Cammenga, Deputy Marnie Mills, Deputy Eric Smith, Deputy Pat Stewart, Deputy Beth VanStrien, and Sgt. Sal Vitale with this Letter of Recognition, for their outstanding service to the Kent County Sheriff Department and the citizens of Kent County. “nar Lo bons Sheriff Lawrence A. Stelma, Sheriff RECEIVED NOV ~ 1 2018 Human Resouroos: LETTER OF RECOGNITION Deputy Marcelo Aranda Deputy Jon Paulson It is with extreme pleasure that I present this Letter of Recognition to Deputy Marcelo Aranda and Deputy Jon Paulson. ‘On Sunday, February 3, 2013, Deputy Jon Paulson noticed a vehicle parked in a parking space with the engine running at 6095 Woodfield Drive SE. Deputy Paulson approached the vehicle and made a citizen contact with an adult male and adult female who were in the back seat of the vehicle. The occupants rolled the window down and Deputy Paulson noticed an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Deputy Paulson obtained consent to search the vehicle at which time he was assisted by Deputy Marcelo Aranda. A search of the vehicle produced approximately two ounces of marijuana, scales, several small baggies, and approximately $6000 in cash; small denominations, all of which indicated distribution of marijuana. Deputy Paulson interviewed the male whose story of how he obtained the money was not credible. Deputy Aranda interviewed the female occupant and obtained information pertinent to the distribution of marijuana investigation. Vice Detective Chris Merriweather responded to the scene and determined there was enough evidence to seize the money and drugs and he will continue working ‘with the male in an attempt to apprehend the next suspect in the marijuana supply chain. As a result of good police work and attention to detail, Deputy Paulson and Deputy ‘Aranda were able to remove drugs and its proceeds from the street as well as create an opportunity to apprehend the next suspect in the marijuana supply chain, Itis, therefore, with great honor that I identify Deputy Marcelo Aranda and Deputy Jon Paulson with this Letter of Recognition, for their outstanding service to the Kent County Sheriff Department and the citizens of Kent County.
