What is Assessment?
“Process of gathering data to better
understand the strengths and weaknesses
(making decision) of student learning”

(Harris and Hodges, 1995).

The Dynamic Cycle of Schooling
The Dynamic Cycle of Schooling
•Successful student learning is most effective with an aligned
system of standards, curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
•When assessment is aligned with instruction, both students and
teachers benefit. Students are more likely to learn because
instruction is focused and because they are assessed on what they
are taught.
•Biggs and Tang (2010) emphasizing constructive alignment.
Various Forms of Assessment
• Assessment for learning:
• before and during; where assessment helps teachers gain insight into what students understand in
order to plan and guide instruction and provide helpful feedback to students. Formative, diagnostic
usually it is recorded but not graded

• Assessment of learning:
• after; where assessment informs students, teachers and parents, as well as the broader educational
community, of achievement at a certain point in time in order to celebrate success, plan
interventions and support continued progress. Summative-mastery test, term exams-usually recorded

• Assessment as learning:
• before, during and after. promotes student disposition; where students develop an awareness of
how they learn and use that awareness to adjust and advance their learning, taking an increased
responsibility for their learning. Self-assessment, self-directed--reflective journals, insights,
reflections
Purposes of Assessment in Teaching
and Learning
To inform and differentiate
instruction/gauging student needs
To find out what the students know, have already understand, what
can they do?, what the student would like to learn
All this data is necessary to be
• Analyzed;
• inform students and set planning with them;
• collaborate planning how best they can learn by guiding them
through or in journey of learning to be fun, enjoyable, and
meaningful to reach:
• what we want them to learn;
• what our curricula specifies;
• and provide disposition of their learning
To monitor the development of
understanding and skills
• Assessment is a journey; it is a process. That is why, the role
of a teacher is to check out the development of understanding
and skills regularly in classroom using different strategies
questioning visible thinking routines.
• This is to make sure that the skills and understanding of the
students we are targeting as teacher and as student in
partnership have developed.
To measure the achievement of the goals
that are developmental

• We use assessment to measure performance

• We try to figure out where the student are according to a
rubric.
• According to developmental rubric we have in mind related to
different skills, facts, ... Related to different concept and
conceptual understanding.
To evidence learning
• We use assessment to evidence learning.
• We need to find out evidence to make sure that they know
something we want him to learn and understand.
• The reason why we encourage to do action researches in the
class to evidence learning.
• To remedy unfulfilled learning in our classroom.
• Evidencing learning is one of the major purpose of
assessment, where we teachers able track students’ learning
difficulty and able to intervene and improve progress of
student.
To report assessment data/ communicate with
the learner, parents and school
• The purpose of assessment is to report data and to communicate
different stakeholders like , parents, school administrators and the
student themselves; where they are in their learning and what they are to
improve.
• The concept of no student left behind, is not that we need to pass all our
student so that they will not leave behind, but we need to communicate
the parents, the students’ themselves and the administrator that based on
assessment.
• Some student fall short in their learning, therefore, need intervention to
level off learning standard.
Purpose of Assessment in Teaching
and Learning
• To inform teaching and Differentiate instruction
• To monitor understanding and skill development
• To measure performance
• To evidence learning
• To report assessment data

What is the connection among
Assessment, Curriculum and Pedagogy
• We assess what the students know, understand and can do.
(Pre-assessment)
• We plan for relevant, meaningful, challenging learning experiences.
We monitor the development of skills and knowledge (Formative
assessment).
• We revise the curriculum based on the process and assessment data
The ultimate goal of assessing
performance is GROWTH…

Summary point
•To recap, the point is that we have to be reflective on
whether the task we are giving to our student is
engaging them in reflecting on what they know and
what they want to know...is it connecting to their
experiences and their previous experiences, so I make
meaningful connection with what I want the student to
learn.

ZPD Approach

-Learners as capable
-Future Oriented
-Learner Driven
How does it looks like in
practice?
First, a teacher should identify what a
student already knows, understand
and can do.

Next, the teacher can build on this

knowledge through scaffolding;

Last, teachers can help students

connect their new learning their prior
knowledge.

the learning pit is part of what he calls a
learning challenge. It is a place that a child

then reach their learning goals once they
have their questions answered.
