Questions on Motivation

1. What makes an employee motivated to go to work?

2. How should a manager motivate his employees that are already working in the company
for several years who are already disengaged in their roles and are required to contribute
to the increased productivity of the company?

3. It is a fact that most companies underwent cost-cutting measures to sustain the company
during the onset of COVID-19. What are ways that a manager should do to motivate
employees amidst the pandemic? As a manager, how can you motivate an employee to still
commit to the organizational goals knowing that the company is operationally unstable?

4. Is it okay for an employee to request the manager that he wants to have a change of job
description (ex. Request for a job rotation) because he/she is not motivated anymore to do
it?

5. Are company bonuses and salary raise powerful enough to motivate employees and
strengthen their OCB? Why do you think so?

6. How will a competent employee manage his motivations to continue contributing to the
company when he feels “betrayed” by the management, after knowing that a newly hired
employee was promoted to a position that he/she is expected to be given to him/her? How
can a manager from another department, who knows the potential of this competent
employee motivate him/her?

7. As an employee, up to what extent can we use emotional and economic pressure as our
source of motivation to continue working in the company?

8. Organ and Ryan (1995) argued that OCBs can only be expected from employees who have
already established positive and long-term relationships with their organization. With this,
they have inferred those contractual workers cannot be expected to demonstrate OCBs
because their employment is designed to be short-term. However, Moorman and Harland
(2002) argued that regardless of the duration of their contracts, as long as these workers
perceive that they are being considered not as peripherals but as core members of the
organization and that they receive fair treatment from the company, they will still perform
OCBs. Which of the following statements do you agree with?

9. Motivation must come from within the employee. Do you agree with this statement? Why
or why not?

Questions on the OB in the Philippines

10. What can you say about the contractualization in the Philippines? Do you think it is a good
thing or a bad thing in terms of employee motivation? Is the idea of contractualization a
big factor that negatively affects the OCB of employees in the Philippines?

11. What are the measures that the management of private hospitals should take in order to
solve the issue of high turnover rate of Filipino nurses in the country? Does the salary raise
enough to make them stay?

12. The Filipinos are one of the most complex individuals in the world in terms of how they
develop their values and attitudes towards the organization that they belong to. This is
mainly because of the cultural influences that they were exposed to in the past (Spanish
culture, American culture, Japanese regime, and the time they are already given the
freedom to become an independent country). Do you agree with this statement? Why or
why not?
