1. A strap footing carries the given loads shown. Both columns are 400 mm square.
Allowable bearing capacity of soil is 120 KPa. The columns are separated at 6.2 m apart.
Assume that the strap is out of contact of soil so that there are no soil reactions to modify
the design assumptions. fc’ = 20.7 MPa, fy = 414 MPa. Use normal weight concrete.

2. A combined footing shown carries an exterior column 300mm x 450mm at the property line which
is subjected to a total service load P1 = 890 KN and P2 = 1557 KN. The live load is 35% of the total
load. The bearing capacity of the soil at the level of the footing base is 192 KPa and the average value of
the soil and footing unit weight is 18.85 KN/m3. A surcharge of 4.8 KPa results from the slab on
grade. fc’ = 20.7 MPa, fy = 415 MPa. Base of footing is at 2.13 m below the grade reinforcement
location factor = 1.3, coating factor is 1.0, reinforcement size factor = 0.8, and normal weighted
concrete is utilized. Assume thickness of footing to be 875 mm. Use 75mm steel covering.
