A basic assumption made for reinforced concrete

design is that there must be absolutely no slippage
of the bars in relation to the surrounding concrete.
In other words, the steel and the concrete should
stick together, or bond, so that they will act as a
unit.

If there is no bonding between the two materials

and if the bars are not anchored at their ends, they
will pull loose from the concrete. As a result, the
concrete beam will act as an unreinforced member
and will be subject to sudden collapse as soon as
the concrete cracks.

In the past, it was common to compute the

Bond Strength, μ maximum theoretical bond stresses at points in
T = Asfy the members and to compare them with certain
allowable values obtained by tests.

The bonding of the reinforcing bars to the concrete is due to several factors:
(a) Chemical adhesion between the two materials
(b) Friction due to the natural roughness of the bars
(c) Bearing of the closely spaced rib-shaped deformations on the bar surfaces against the concrete.

Examples of bond failures that may occur for different
values of concrete cover and bar spacing.
Splitting resistance along bars depends on quite a few
factors, such as :
(1) the thickness of the concrete cover
(2) The spacing of the bars
(3) The presence of coatings of the bars
(4) Types of aggregates used
(5) The transverse confining effect of stirrups

Development length, ℓd, can be defined as the minimum

length of embedment of bars that is necessary to permit
ℓ𝒅 them to be stressed to their yield point plus some extra
distance to ensure member toughness.
