Re: report on the implementation of media literacy into the current curriculum

Media education can be considered a revolutionary tool in the hands of health educators
who can help to navigate safely and consciously into this media-saturated world. Being in
control instead of being controlled: this is one of the basic goals of media education
processes in the third millennium, linking media education with health education goals
(Pellai, 2010 p1)

RATIONALE
Future students are born into the Information Age and they are exposed to various
types of media text even before they step into the school hoodenvironment. With this
trend, it is not wrong to assume that there is a demand on Media Literacy Education,
especially in primary schools. In relation to this issue, this rationale report aims at
convincing the administration board to introduce Media Literacy subject in school.

Media Literacy introduction lies not only onmeets the demands of current social
trends, but also the Malaysian Smart School Policy. This policy is drawn on in 1997
with an aim to prepare learners for the Information Age. This is made clear through
its definition: “The Malaysian Smart School is a learning institution that has been
systemically reinvented in terms of teaching-learning practices and school
management in order to prepare children for the Information Age” (The Malaysian
Smart School, 1997, p. 20). In fact, this policy outlines six characteristics of a smart
school which holistically reflect on every member of the community namely
administration, teacher, students and society. In addition, the Malaysian Smart
School is developed based on six key components which three of them: Teaching
and Learning, Technologies and Processes, are most suitable to be the foundation
Media Literacy subject.

The Malaysian Smart School Policy has a well-designed curriculum which shaped
the teaching and learning environment. In fact, this curriculum is related to Media
Literacy. In this curriculum, the integration of knowledge, skill, value and correct use
of language across curriculum is emphasised. As a point of contact, language is one

of the media key concepts. It is manipulatively used to convey messages to different

targeted audiences. This suggests that both, the policy and subject share a similar
taught in term of correct language use. This will therefore benefit the students as
they are exposed to critical and creative thinking skills, values and most importantly,
the opportunity to improve language proficiency.

In addition, the curriculum also utilises technology in teaching and learning activities
to deliver input, examine its influence and teach related skills to the students.
Maximising the utilisation of technology is possible through Media Literacy teaching.
This is because; this subject is heavily dependent on technology. In media
education, technology refers to tools or materials used in producing meaning
(Stewart, 2011). Apart from the curriculum, technology is also one of the policy’s key
concepts. This adds the weigh to the relevance of media education in school. It is
evident in the policy’s teaching and learning materials feature. In this feature, media
is used to conduct lessons and it is divided into three categories namely printed, 3D
objects and audio/visual. The similarity in the aspect of technology clearly shows that
Media Literacy is relevant to The Malaysian Smart School Policy.

I think you need a bit more ref and theory and I would also put in a paragraph here
that states that the two learning episodes are to demonstrate the importance of
implementing media lessons within the curriculum

In conclusion, Media Literacy should be introduced in the school because this

subject prepares students with relevant and beneficial skills for the Information Age.
In fact, the subject is firmly grounded on The Malaysian Smart School Policy. This
shows that media literacy subject is relevant to the school community, especially
students.
