Exercise 2.1
Read and translate the text
The Internet is a huge network of
computers spanning this planet and
is now started to bring in the
surrounding area like space. Some
computers like servers share data,
others just surf the web as clients
downloading the data. Public
Internet began in the late 70's. In the
70's web users used an interface
called telnet, but now that program
is mainly obsolete.
The Internet is very helpful, because it's a huge database of knowledge,
from the pictures of family trips to an analysis of quantum mechanics. But
how to go on the Internet and do a search for information we need. There are
two ways to do it. The first is when you know an internet address of data you
need and the second one is when you try to find information you need by
using a search program. In the beginning we have got to enter any browser
you like. If we have a broadband connection, we connect to the Internet at
once. If not, we have to set up and connect to our dial-up service. Finally, if
we want to find some information in the Internet, we are to type an address
of this data in the browser we use or simply use the existing search-programs
such as the google search program, rambler search program, yandex search
program or yahoo search program. They are very simple and popular
networks of sites. In these programs we can just type the word or name of
thing, we would like to find and then press enter. A search program solves
this problem. We get our results in the same window.
Besides data, one can get from the Internet, we can also send and receive
e-mail or electronic mail. This internet service is cheaper than ordinary mail
and much quicker. It is becoming popular day by day. We can get some
news from the Internet, because there are many informational servers in the
web.

 Always add your name at the end of your message.
 You don’t need to use DEAR to begin a formal E-mail, just HI is
acceptable.
 E-mails are usually written at speed, so people very often do not write
in complete or grammatically correct sentences.
 Abbreviations are also often used to save time.

The Computers People Have Been Dreaming of for a Long Time.

People had been using calculating machines long before the first computers
appeared. And for over the last 60 years the scientists and engineers have
been improving them. Now it is impossible to imagine our life without
computers. Today they are everywhere.
Nobody can deny it. Any young specialist who wants to get a good job has
to deal with computer technique. One can choose any computer
configuration he needs. Some prefer laptops because they can take them
anywhere, others buy desktops. It depends upon a person's job. If you don't
know which computer to choose because you are a newbie, you can ask for a
piece of advice and any computer-literate person will recommend you the
best one that is the closest to your ideal or dream.
Modern computers are extremely powerful, run with operating systems
working with optical disks and multimedia applications, can integrate text
and pictures with animation and voice applications. They have the best
performance and expendability. And the most important thing is that the
prices are dropping!
So, if you haven't bought the computer of your dream yet, go to the shop

The PROS and CONS of using the Internet

7
Advertisements for the Internet promise you a world of information,
entertainment, on-line shopping and e-mail services.
(1)..............., the real world of the Internet may not be as perfect as the
advertisements suggest.
Using the Internet offers many advantages. (2)..., all of the latest
information is available to you, in your home, at any hour of the day or
night. It is much faster and easier to surf the net in search of information
from all over the world than to travel to libraries in dozens of
countries. (3)........., on-line shopping makes it possible to search through
catalogues to find exactly what you want at the best price, saving both time
and money. By joining a newsgroup or chat group, you can share your
hobbies and special interests, and perhaps make friends all over
the world. (4).........E-mail is popular because it is faster than sending a
letter and cheaper than a telephone conversation.
(5) …... , the Internet has several disadvantages. (6) with so
much information available, finding what you want can take long hours.
Multimedia web pages with photographs, music and video are
attractive, (7)..........they make downloading slow and boring.
(8)........, there is too much advertising instead of real information.
As for Internet friendships, sitting at home in front of a computer making
'chat friends' is not the same as actually meeting people. (9) .... the Internet
obviously has both good and bad points. For anately, the system is
improving all the time, and any problems which still exist can be solved.
Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay, so we have to make the
best possible use of it.
