Communications

One of the most exciting areas in the world of computers is the posibility of
communicating with others. Just imagine being in touch, from your home or office,
with other users in New York, Roome, Tokyo or perhaps a remote farm in Jokmokk
in the deepest forests of Sweden or any other isolated place!

If you're a beginner in communications, just inquisitive or one of those who have

accepted that communications probably is an exciting possibility "but why the hell
didn't it work for me..." then you should read this very basic guide.

Why communicate?

PEople communicate either because it's fun or because it's necessary. Either way,
there are five main areas of communication:

1. Data transfer

Data transfer involves sending data from one computer to another. Where the
two computers are situated is not very important and the data can really be
anything; a document or massage, a set of of financial reports, a picture, a
program. Data transfers can be simple messages or, with the help of a
specialised communications program, reports can be sent to hundreds of
specified destinations at specified times. Computer programs can also be sent
from one place to another.

2. Information retrieval

Around the world are many information services that provide databases
through which you can access information and data on just about anything and
everything. You can keep up to date with Wall Street using data provided by
Dow Jones, check the tiimes of flights to Cardiff, or scan travel news, books,
entertainments, press releases, scientific reports - to name just a few areas. A
warning - searching for information can be expensive - so if you intend to do a
lot of searching find out the costs first, and get instructions that will help you
access information efficiently.

3. Control of a remote computer

Together with a specially designed program it is possible to sit by one

computer and control another computer. You can for example use a computer
at home to work with your office computer or a computer consultant could
help you correct problem on your computer withouthaving to leave his/her
office.

4. BBS - Bulletin Board Systems

A BBS is a sort of local communications centre to which several (often

hundreds) users call to exchange messages, ideas and programs. Many
software houses now have their own BBS acting as a support centre for their
products.

5. Direct contact with other users

You can call another person and be in direct contact with them thus having an
interactive communications session. You could for example exchange ideas
and transmit files, and there are even on-line computer dating services!
