Three Architects in Specialized Design Services

Architect (s): Christine Sicangco and Jo Vincent Gonzaga

Specialty: Architectural Lighting Layout & Design

For the first case, I will actually be discussing two architects as their works coincide with each
other due to the nature of being in the same company. Jo Vincent Gonzaga and Christine
Sicangco are architects who co-founded Christine Sicangco Lighting Design Inc (CSLDI) in
1994, and have for almost three decades worked on numerous projects specializing in lighting
for high-end locations, having worked on malls, hospitals, airports, residences, etc. The firm has
also expanded into other works such as historic renovation/adaptive re-use, master planning,
retail works, entertainment, and site development.

Christine Sicangco graduated from Parsons School of Design, with a Master of Fine Arts in
Architectural Lighting Design and Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts from the San Diego State
University in San Diego, California. She has worked in two previous lighting firms, Hortlon Lees
Lighting Design, Inc. and Johnson Scwhinghammer Lighting Consultants in New York, where
she primarily focused on lighting for projects in retail, hospitals, airports and offices. The other
con-founder of the company, Jo Vincent Gonzaga, graduated from the University of the Pacific
in Stockton, California with a degree in BS Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.

Sicangco and Gonzaga specializes in designing and manufacturing of lighting fixtures and
products, who’s designs focusing on the use of indigenous materials have won awards
internationally and locally. A recent work, Thou Garden, was a finalist in the [d]arc awards in
2020, a competition lead by leading lighting publications arc and darc magazine. Other famous
lighting works they have done are in AYALA Westgrove, One Rockwell, Molito Lifestyle Center,
Mount Carmel Shrine, and OKADA Manila Hotel.

Their choice of work seems extremely set on from the start, as early on their diplomas in lighting
design indicate that they were already passionate on the specialty of lighting. Part of my career
target is also to focus on works specializing in lighting and design, so their works serve as good
reference and inspiration.

Brian Mirakian is a Senior Principal at Populous, an international firm specializing in sports

facilities, arenas and convention centers, as well as the planning and design of major special
events. Particularly, Brian leads on modern works, such as in esports and digital entertainment
in America.

Brian is a graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University. Brian would
also later join Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD), a design group focusing on
the use of implementing graphic design to the built environment for space. Focused on
innovative topics and design, his work has mainly focused on buildings for the next generation
of consumerists and users. One particular field he is prominent in is Esports and gaming, having
worked on the Esports Arlington Stadium in Arlington City, Texas, Fortress Melbourne in
Australia, G4 TV and digital network headquarters in Los Angeles and the NBA2K League’s
Competition Arena. He has also worked on physical venues for physical sport events for
multiple events and locations for the olympics.

In 2002 he won the KC AIA American Institute of Architects Allied Arts & Craftsmanship Award,
and the I.D. Magazine Annual Design Revie-Merit Award. Brian’s work has focused on special
building designs and facilities in the field of esports and entertainment, integrating technology
and innovations. For me I find his work and choice of specialized work innovative and risk
taking, venturing into new fields that emerge with the current times. Currently my thesis proposal
is also focused on that field and in the future I would also like to work in the specialized fields for
Unique building facilities and Design such as in esports and other event oriented venues.
