FORMS OF PRECIPITATION

RAIN

HAIL
RAIN is the most common type of
precipitation in our atmosphere.

RAIN takes place when drops of liquid

water fall all the way to the surface of the
Earth.

The principal form of precipitation in the

Philippines. The diameter of raindrops is
usually 5 to 6 mm and larger than 0.5 mm.
DRIZZLE
Drizzle falls mostly from low stratus clouds
and is frequently accompanied with fog and
poor visibility.
Drizzle drops are smaller (between 0.2 and
0.5 mm) and their terminal velocities are
between 70 and 200 cm per second.
The Differences between
Rain and Drizzle:
Size of water droplets
Number of water droplets
Speed at which water droplets fall
Effect on visibility
Another Forms of Precipitation
SHOWER is characterized by sudden
start marked by the occurrence of a few
large drops followed by downpour lasting
from 1/2 to 1 hour.

GLAZE is formed when rain or drizzle

come in contact with cold ground at around
0 degrees Celsius.
GLAZE
SNOW - consists of ice crystals which
usually combine to form flakes.

SLEET - frozen raindrops of transparent

grains which form when rain falls through
the air at subfreezing temperature.

HAIL - showery precipitation in the form of

irregular pellets or lumps of ice. Hails occur
in violent thunderstorms.
MEASUREMENT
OF
PRECIPITATION
Amount of Precipitation is expressed as the
depth of rain in inches or millimeters that fall on a
level surface.
Duration of Rainfall - the beginning and
cessation of precipitation.
Continuous - no rainless interval
Intermittent - varying intensity and there
are no breaks of atleast 15 minutes but not
more than 1 hour.
Intensity of Rainfall - the amount of precipitation
per unit time.
