CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM and it Its BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the present or even in the past, food is very important to our

everyday life. To be able to avoid being sick or have a disease we must need

to supply foods in our body because it contains protein, carbohydrates, and

lipids that each and every one of us needs. (G.R. Krishna, 2017). In order to

survive, human beings needs to eat foods.

These days fast food chains is well known to all, most specifically to

the Generation Z or those who are in their Senior High School or College life.

Fast food chains is the fastest way to get a food to eat particulary when you

have a limited time only. It is also very budget friendly that most students

prefers fast food rather than any other fancy restaurants. A fast food chain is

an on premise type of services and is belong to Quick Service Restaurants or

QSR. According to the Wikipedia, the American company in White Castle that

sells hamburger was the very first fast-food outlet and most historians agreed

to it. Started in Wichita, Kansas in 1916 with food stands and was founded in

the year 1921.

Stated in Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (2016),

there are more than 4,000 fast food that has been established in the said year.

In today’s time, we have our own and most known fast food chains that locals

love to visit. Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Goldilocks, and others are the most

patrionized fast food that are loved by the Filipinos (Escalona, 2018).

However, there are students who prefers homemade foods instead

of fast foods. Basically, homemade food is prepared at home. Usually the

ingredients that used in making the dishes are natural and fresh. Compared to

the food we ordered outside, in here we can choose our own ingredients that

we will use and we have the control over its taste.

Other than those, there are more advantages when preparing your

own meal. First is that it is more healthier, you can minimized each ingredients

that is being used and you can even make your own balanced diet food. You

can also control the portion size of the food, you can gain more knowledge

while preparing or studying a new dish, personal dietary requirements can be

met, and etc. (Goodman, 2022)

Therefore, disadvantage of the homemade meals is that it is more

pricey than the fast food chains. We all know that in this day and age, the

commodity prices are going up and up. While the fast food meals prices

fortunately stayed on their affordable prices. It will be very hard for the

students to budget their money now that we are slowly going back to the

normal classes in which we attend in our school or what we called these days

face-to-face classes.

Background of the study

1
ARELLANO UNIVERSITY- SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Students in Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus are

expecting to start their face-to-face classes on November year of the 2022. By

this, the students need to fulfill their hunger while they attend to the said

University. In our study, we aim to know the prefences of the Chiefs in

choosing a food and place to eat between fast food and homemade meals.

Why and what makes them choose their choice.

In Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus there are a lot of fast

food that you can go to. Some fast food that you can see around it are Jollibee

and McDonald’s. Jollibee has around 1,200 branches in the Philippines while

the other has more than 600 outlets (Nelz, 2022). But with the limited time,

some ustudents will want to eat their homemade food inside the campus

instead of walking and ordering to the fast food and a long line awaits to them.

We all know that Arellano University is inside the University belt so other than

fast food, it is also surrounded with other Universities.

Arellano University students conducted a comparative study of home-

made and fast food towards the preference for eating out in choosing the

place and food to determine how effective both types of restaurants were in

providing the students with a variety of foods that they desired. The study also

aimed to determine if there was any difference in satisfaction between both

types of restaurants when taking into consideration the student’s age, sex and

income level.

This study was conducted to see if students would prefer to eat

homemade food inside or outside of campus. Most of the students preferred to

eat homemade food inside the campus because they felt more comfortable

and safe there compared to being in a restaurant. They preferred to eat inside

the campus because it was more convenient and comfortable, while others

preferred to eat at fast food restaurants because it was cheaper.
