Middle East some 5,000 years ago, due to the
societies, people use hoes and creation of the plow. The plow, when carried
by oxen and other big animals, allowed for far

Around the same period, the wheel was
developed, and written language and
numerals were introduced. Thus, the rise of
agricultural communities signified a turning
point in the evolution of human society.
Ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome were
all agrarian cultures, as are India and many

As machinery and factories
supplanted the plow and other agricultural
equipment as the dominant means of
production in the 1700s, industrial
civilizations evolved. The early machines were
powered by steam and water, but electricity
ultimately took over as the primary source of
power. The rise of industrial civilizations
brought about such profound changes in
many of the world's societies that the era
from around 1750 to the late 1800s is now
known as the Industrial Revolution. This
revolution has had massive ramifications in
practically every facet of society, some for the
better and others for the worst.
