Theme and Objectives
The biological membrane is one of the most fundamental cellular constituents involved in various
physiological events such as intracellular vesicular trafficking, cell division and cell migration. The key
feature of the membrane is the significant physical flexibility that supports its dynamic morphological
changes. Involved in this process is a group of cytosolic proteins that reversibly interact with lipid
bilayer, creating unique curvature thus shape of the membrane. Recent research by many laboratories
has revealed necessary roles of such proteins in endocytosis, thus is gathering increasing attentions
from the scientific community. In this course, students will be trained to understand and follow up the
scientific topics not only in this particular research field, but also cell biology in general. Through the

Title Special Lecture Ⅰ 6 credits Semester 1st and 2nd

Theme and Objectives
Neuropsychopharmacology aims to understand actions of psychotropic drugs and functions of
neural molecules as their targets, thereby contributing to pharmaceutical development for
psychiatric disorders. In this lecture series, students will learn roles and functions of neural
molecules underlying cognitive and emotional behaviors, such as neurotransmitters, growth factors
and inflammation-related molecules, in relation to structures and functions of neural circuits and
neuron-glia interactions. Students will also learn methods of analyses of neural functions at
molecular, cellular, neural circuit and behavioral levels with spatiotemporally specific manipulation
of gene expression and neuronal activity.

Title Special Lecture Ⅱ 4 credits Semester 1st and 2nd

Theme and Objectives
In this lecture series, students will learn how genetic susceptibilities and environmental factors
alter functions of neural molecules, thereby affecting cognitive and emotional behaviors and
precipitating psychiatric disorders. Students will also learn how to use preclinical models,
especially acute and chronic stress models in rodents, and how to analyze associated molecular,
cellular and neural circuit changes. Validity and limitations of these models will also be discussed.
Learned as well as newly developed methods will be employed to identify novel molecular, cellular
and neural-circuit mechanisms underlying cognitive and emotional behaviors as well as these
dysfunctions. Given their own results, students will learn how to assemble experimental results
and write an original paper.

“Translational Science” is the field of investigation focused on understanding the scientific and
operational principles underlying each step of the translational process. Translation is the
process of turning observations in the laboratory, clinic and community into interventions that
can improve the health of individuals and public. Thus, it includes not only the processes to
apply basic research findings to humans, but also the processes to execute clinical trials, to
extend the results in clinical practice, and to transfer clinical study findings to the population
health. Each process must be implemented through ethically, legally and socially righteous
methodologies, which are realized, for instance, by animal experiments, clinical trials and
observational studies. This special lecture aims to cultivate scientific principles underpinning
such translational processes, and to learn how to facilitate respective processes leading to the
improvement of medicine and public welfare.

developments, whereby proactive initiatives of academic expertise are strongly expected. At
the same time, the current medical technologies should be continuously evaluated and
optimized, through well designed implementation studies, with the risk for public health
adequately controlled. The success is dependent not only on basic science and cutting edge
medicine, but also on multidisciplinary science, including clinical science, regulatory science and
data science. Also, execution of clinical trials is justified only through strict adherence to the
globally authorized research ethics. Thus, this special lecture aims to understand scientific and
