Subject: SOCSCI_212 ETHICS Chapter: CHAPTER 12: REASON AND

IMPARTIALITY AS REQUIREMENTS
FOR ETHICS

Assessment Questions:

1. Duterte: 4Ps beneficiaries, soldiers to get COVID-19 vaccine priority (headline of

Philippine Star, October 14, 2020). Comment if this decision of the president is fair,
equitable or unprejudiced. Cite any of the Principles Impartiality discussed in the
lesson.

I think that the decision of the president is fair. It is fair because he chose to give it to
the ones who are in dire need of it like the soldiers who maintain our national security
and the 4Ps beneficiaries who have no means to purchase the said vaccine. Being fair
means treating individuals not in the same or identical way but in a way that ensures
that individuals are given the resources they need to have access to the same
opportunities, when it comes to fairness the needs and resources of a person is
considered. I think that the president was able to exercise his professional judgment
which is on the principles of impartiality because I think that he assessed the situation
based on the degree of vulnerability of these people on the priority list since they are
really expose to the virus aside from our respected medical workers, for example, the
4Ps beneficiaries since they always have to go outside to earn for their daily needs.
Although the decision of the president to have soldiers as one of the priorities for this
vaccine can be interpreted by other people as bias because of how he always favors
the military but for me the decision is somehow reasonable given that the soldiers are
also on the frontlines fighting this pandemic.

2. Cite an experience in life that would demonstrate the following concepts below and
include the lessons you have learned out of those experience:

2.1 Fair

Fairness is often demanded by a lot of people, but the thing is, it is often
misunderstood as being equal when in fact they are actually very different. With
being fair, I can say that I have experience that in the family. My parents are fair
when it comes to treating us. They don’t give us equal treatment because each of
us have different needs. Each of us adjusts depending on the needs of another

meaning I should understand if my parents give smaller number of chores or
duties to my siblings because they are not as physically fit to do a lot. Or they
should also understand if my parents give me bigger amount of allowance given
that I am already in college and I still have to pay for my fare and other fees. This
is my experience with fairness, and it might be very basic, but I guess the lesson
here is sometimes we demand so much for fairness, but we refuse and skip the
process of examining the situation that we are in. We might sometimes feel
neglected and unheard because we don’t get the same treatment that other
people get but maybe it’s because others have a harder situation than us
therefore, they receive the greater amount of attention or better treatment than us.
However, it is okay that we voice out our feelings when we feel that we don’t get
the right treatment that we deserve as a person.

2.2 Equitable

Equitable treatment means people receive the same opportunity to reach their
goals while specific considerations are in place. With equity I experience that in
school or in the classroom because in a classroom we are given the same goals
and tasks, but our teachers also consider our needs and individual differences
especially our abilities and learning differences. For instance, our teachers give us
the same task, but they also ensure that each student who learns in a different
way has an opportunity to learn with maximum ability and that is by providing us
with strategies and methods that we can use to improve our skills so we can
complete the same task. They provide us with the resources that is suitable for our
needs so that no one is left out and we can all achieve our goals. It’s like we are
tasked to go to the same destination but since we have different ways of thinking
and we are not coming from one specific place we will utilize different ways to get
there. What I’ve learned from this is that as a future teacher or educator it is
important to cultivate and establish an equitable classroom environment where
everyone feels supported and included, and this also applies outside the
classroom. We need an inclusive environment where everyone feels valid and
supported despite the diversity of human race.

2.3 Unprejudiced

Unprejudiced means there is no pre-conceived ideas or judgement about a person

or group. The only place that I can feel that is free from prejudice or judgement is
at home. At home I can be myself and not be afraid of judgement and
misconceptions from other people. Of course, we are reprimanded when we do
something that’s not right but the things that they say are appropriate and they say

it because they know me genuinely unlike outside it is easier for people to
conclude than know the story first. I know that other people also feels the same
that they will be misunderstood by other people, so it is very ironic because almost
all of us feels and thinks the same but the problem is still there. So, for me the take
away here is to just be understanding and be openminded to accept and respect
the differences that we have and remember that all of us is coming from different
situations and that we don’t know the story behind every action and behavior. It is
always important to assess the situation before making any judgement.

2.4 Unbiased

During my elementary and high school years I was a student writer or journalist
and if there is anything that has always been emphasized in that field it was about
our works and write-ups to be bias-free. Our piece should be void of any personal
preferences and our own subjective opinions because that is how we can maintain
credibility. Being bias on articles can be a challenge especially if it contradicts your
personal beliefs but that is how journalism should be all facts and only objective
statements. If there is anything that I have learned from that it’s always to set
aside personal views especially on topics that includes critical information as your
readers may interpret it in ways that it should not be. It should also be applied in
our day to day lives more importantly nowadays where information is everywhere
and if there is anything that we can do to avoid fake news; let’s not add up and
remove information just because it is different from what we believe in.
