Quarter 1 Week 5 Module 11

Learning Competency:
Identify various potential earthquake hazards

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you while
enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!

1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of
this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing
enhances learning, that is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!

PARTS OF THE MODULE

• Expectations - These are what you will be able to know after completing the
lessons in the module
• Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the
concepts to be mastered throughout the lesson.
• Looking Back to your Lesson - This section will measure what
learnings and skills did you understand from the previous lesson.
• Brief Introduction- This section will give you an overview of the lesson.

• Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform with a partner.

• Remember - This section summarizes the concepts and

applications of the lessons.

• Check your Understanding - It will verify how you learned from the lesson.

• Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from
the entire module.

LESSON : VARIOUS POTENTIAL EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS

EXPECTATIONS
This module will let you grasp the idea of what an earthquake hazards is.
Specifically, you will be able to accomplish the following:
a. explain the different potential earthquake hazards

How about checking what you know first before you start learning new? I believe
you can answer the set of questions given below. God bless!

PRETEST

Directions: Write the letter of the correct answer that best describe the idea.
1. Select from the following list, all the factors that affect the intensity of ground
shaking.
a. The magnitude of the earthquake
b. Rather or not the moon is full
c. The distance from the epicenter
d. The angle between a fault and the maximum principal stress direction
e. The local geological conditions
2. What kinds of materials amplify ground shaking?
a. Hard rocks
b. Rocks with a foliation
c. Plutonic rocks
d. Soft soils and sediments
e. Metamorphosed sedimentary rocks
3. How far from Mexico City was the epicenter for the so called 1985 Mexico City
earthquake?
a. ~100 km b. ~200 km c. ~300 km d. ~400 km e. ~500 km
4. Along what kind of a plate boundary did the 1985 Mexico City earthquake occur:
a.convergent b. divergent c.transform?
5. What was the magnitude of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake?
a. 6.0 b. 7.0 c. 7.5 d. 8.0 e. 8.5

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Earthquake Hazards. The sort of danger relies upon the quality of seismic movement,
alongside such factors as nearby geographical and manufactured highlights, subsurface
topography and groundwater. An enormous seismic tremor will consistently be trailed by a
grouping of consequential convulsions

ACTIVITY 1: Earthquake Hazards and Its Effect

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the potential different effects from a major earthquake
2. Relate the different effects with linked to earthquake hazards
3. Discover and explain the different earthquake-related hazards that can affect my
home and community
1. Gather photos of impacts of earthquake.
2. Talk About the 5 different earthquake-related hazards using the photos.
3. Hazards - Risks are events or marvels which will cause misfortune of life,
damage or other wellbeing impacts, property harm, misfortune of business

3
and administrations, social and financial disturbance or environmental
damage. The taking after are the foremost common earthquake-related risks:
ground burst, ground shaking, liquefaction, tidal wave, and earthquake-
induced avalanches

4. Liquefaction

5. Earthquake-induced
landslide

EARTHQUAKE-RELATED HAZARDS
I. Ground shaking- troublesome up-down and sideways development or
movement experienced amid an seismic tremor
II. Ground rupture- displacement on the ground due to movement of fault .
III. Tsunami- sea waves resulting from the disturbance of ocean floor by an
earthquake
IV. Liquefaction- may be a prepare that changes over the behavior of a body
of silt from that of a strong to that of a fluid when subjected to greatly
strongly shaking
V. Earthquake-induced landslide- failures in soak or sloping slants
activated by a seismic tremor

4
ACTIVITY 2: IT’S ALL ABOUT ME

Direction:
1. Learners, based on what YOU have learned so far, think of your home, what are the possible
impacts/ effects of the 5 earthquake hazards to their home/s?
2. Learners to accomplish the checklist below, bear in mind the following questions
What are the potential hazards that can affect me, my home and my community?
How? Will I be affected by (check all the will apply)
I. Ground Rupture (only if a fault passes through my home) (Note: This will be
important for areas with known presence of faults)
II. Ground shaking: Yes
III. Liquefaction (Note, only for areas near rivers, coastal areas, underlain by soft
sediments or water-saturated materials)
IV. Earthquake-induced landslide (if my home is near/ at the base or on the slope
of a mountain side)
V. Tsunami (if my home is near the coast)

REMEMBER
The primary effects of earthquakes are ground shaking, ground rupture,
landslides, tsunamis, and liquefaction. Fires are probably the single most important
secondary effect of earthquakes.

4. Earthquake-induced landslide

6
Critical Thinking
Reinforce, reiterate where / in which environment each of the earthquake hazard is
experienced or is more prominent.

POSTTEST
Directions: True or False. Write true if the statement is true and write false if the
statement is not true
_____ 1. Strong ground shaking can also result to minor damages to buildings and worse,
cause collapse of a structure. (e.g. collapse of Hyatt Hotel, Baguio City after the 16
July 1990 Luzon Earthquake
_____ 2. This will be experienced by areas where fault passes through (note not all cracks on
the ground that people see after a strong earthquake are faults, some may just be
surficial cracks because of ground failure)
_____ 3. This is a series of giant sea waves commonly generated by under-the-sea
earthquakes and whose heights could be greater than 5 meters.
_____ 4. As a result, any heavy load on top of the sediment body will either sink or tilt as the
sediment could no longer hold the load, such as what happened in Dagupan City
during the 16 July 1990 earthquake. (e.g. San Francisco 1906:

liquefaction_during_the_1906_san_francisco_earthquake)
_____ 5. Many landslides occur as a result of strong ground shaking such as those observed
on the mountainsides along the National Highway in Nueva Ecija and the road
leading up to Baguio City during the 16 July 1990 earthquake.
