Assessment

A. Define the following terms in your own words. (5 pts each)

Ecology – it is the study of the interaction of organisms with one another together with their physical
environment
Environment - it is the surroundings or condition where an organism lives, operates, or adapts.
Habitat – it is the available resources, physical, and biotic factors that surrounds an environment
Niche – it is the interactions of species with other species within their environment such as their
competition, predation, parasitism, and mutualism
B. List down all the biotic and abiotic factors in the ecosystem illustrated in page 32 of PECOSY1
module. (20pts)

Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors

 Polar bear  Sedimentation

 Pinnipeds/Seal  Temperature
 Fishes  Glucose
 Lobster  Oxygen
 Phytoplankton  Nutrients
 Zooplankton  Soil
 Organic Deposits  Sunlight/Energy
 CO2
 Seawater
 Sea ice
 Sand
 Resuspension of nutrients
 Air
 Rocks

C. Make a food web with the following organisms: eagle, flower, mouse, rabbit, snake, bacteria and
fungi. Identify the producer, consumer and decomposer in the food web. (20 points)

Legend:
Decomposer
Producer
Consumer
D. MATCHING TYPE. Match the processes that occur during the bio-geo-chemical cycles found in
Column B with the descriptions found in Column B. Write the letter of your answer on the space provided
before each number. (10pts)
