THE COVER STORY

ANDRE R AMGAT TIE, EMBA 2017

“At the time of my application to the Telfer Executive MBA in 2015, I was looking to grow. I was interested
in creating a career rather than the feeling of just having a job.” Andre Ramgattie realized his objective
with the Telfer Executive MBA program, a program that focuses on real-world learning and on teamwork.
“I was sold on Telfer. I believed that there could be no better experience than being able to apply
what we learned in real-time to real business environments.” Andre was then a Business Development
Consultant for Industrial Alliance’s SAL Group and he understood he needed to increase his confidence
by strengthening his business competencies. He leveraged the 21-month program by embracing the
action-based learning platform and immediately applied the learnings at his work. Andre also took the
opportunity to showcase his skill sets by working on multiple projects, including his Individual Strategy
Assignment that saw him engaging and consulting with his organization’s executives—right up to the
Executive Vice-President level. He asked for more responsibilities at work and actively identified a
business area where his skills could be utilized to benefit the organization. His persistence resulted with
a promotion to Director of Market Intelligence right after his graduation. “Telfer Executive MBA program
gave me the tools that allowed me to articulate and pitch my value, specifically the value I would bring
to this new role. This subsequently created an opportunity for me to begin discussions regarding longer
term career development that were evidence-based and tied to my value to the organization.”

DR. VIRGINIA ROTH, EMBA 2012

Dr. Virginia Roth made history as the first female Chief of Staff at The Ottawa Hospital in January 2018.
Virginia’s Executive MBA journey began in 2010 when she was Director, Infection Prevention and Control
Program at the Ottawa Hospital and had previously spent 10 years as a specialist in infectious disease.
Attaining an Executive MBA was not something that Virginia had planned to do, especially while maintaining
a busy practice at the hospital. She was encouraged by the hospital’s senior management to embrace the
opportunity to expand her business management and business leadership skill sets. Virginia accepted
the opportunity and joined the Telfer Executive MBA program in Ottawa. The program captured her
attention because of the in-class structure and the market-driven practical learning that she would
attain. The next two years brought her more than she had expected. “As a Physician, I am so engrained
in my area of expertise that it was really beneficial to hear perspectives from people who work outside
of my sector. The concepts are the same but everyone comes at things from a different angle based
on their own experience. I can still pick up the phone and ask for their advice. They may know nothing
about my reality at the hospital but they understand leadership. Given the unique relationship between
the hospital and its physicians, it is important in my role [as Chief of Staff] to lead by influence and
inspiration. Thankfully this is a skill that I honed while doing my Executive MBA.”

STÉPHANE BRIAND, EMBA 2016

After completing nearly 20 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces, Stéphane Briand found himself
at a career crossroad in 2014. He was looking for something to propel him to the next career path outside
of the armed forces. His career in the armed forces had provided him with immense team and leadership
experience under intense and high-stress situations, both in Canada and in missions abroad. Stéphane’s
enrolment in the Executive MBA’s Class of 2016 complimented his 2013 Master’s in Military Studies.
The 21-month experience enabled him to add a targeted business mind-set and a process that would
provide him with the tools and skills he would require at the executive level in the private sector. He
was also cognisant of the relevance of soft skills and cultural filters that he acquired while working
with client organizations from various sectors in Canada and in global markets. Looking back, Stéphane
now understands why the program focused heavily on leadership skill sets and business management
competencies as accelerators because ultimately, these skill sets enabled a seamless transition from
his military career to an executive role in the private sector. “The Telfer Executive MBA gave me the
business skills and confidence to speak with executives about the value and transferrable skills I bring
to an organization.” In 2018, after 23 years with the Royal 22e Régiment, Stéphane decided to hang up his
uniform for a suit and tie. He joined Great West Life as Transformation Lead for their Individual Customer
segment. The move has ultimately changed his personal and professional trajectory.
