SAMPLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (Industrial Engineer with Work Experience)

My knack and passion for problem solving makes consulting an ideal choice for me. Being able to help top
business firms make critical strategic decisions would be an exciting and challenging career.

For the past two and a half years I have been working with ZS Associates – A global sales and marketing
consulting firm. My experience at ZS has helped me utilize my analytical abilities to solve business and
technical problems. My work has mainly included areas like Sales force effectiveness and sales call planning.
I have had the opportunity to interact with overseas clients, across 12 countries in Europe, to understand their
business problems and help develop models to deliver the solutions. I have been the primary client contact for
different projects and have developed very good working relationships with them.

My work here has also helped me gain good people’s management skills as I was able to work effectively in a
team and also lead project teams successfully towards the later part of my tenure. My work here has been
challenging and multi-task oriented, hence I have also learnt the art of managing my work along with my team’s
task allocation, keeping in mind the timelines of the projects. Apart from working in varied projects, I took the
initiative to organize training sessions. I emerged as an expert in Microsoft Excel & VBA and a host of internal
ZS tools, and conducted regular training sessions for the newly joined associates.

From my school days, I have been a top achiever in academics. After completing my schooling I joined the
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur to pursue a 5 year dual degree (B.Tech & M.Tech) course in
Industrial Engineering and Management. During my course I learnt various subjects that helped me gain an
understanding of methods to streamline industrial and business processes. I also saw their practical application
at Maruti Udyog Ltd. and Honeywell Technology Solutions limited during my internships.

I had wide interests and actively participated in extra-curricular activities. I was a part of my hostel’s Bridge
and Dramatics team that won Gold medal in the inter-hostel competitions. I was also involved in coordinating
the Annual techno-management fest at my college. This helped me develop organizing and team skills. I learnt
how to manage situations and motivate people. I understood how lack of clear communication can cause
disruptions in the smooth flow of work. I also found that managing people was the most crucial part of a
manager’s job. This exposure to management and the managerial skills I developed have helped me perform
effectively at work.

I feel now is the time to take the next step—an MBA. My internships during engineering have exposure me to
operations and logistics. My experience at ZS Associates has given me a good perspective into business
problems, particularly in sales and marketing related to the healthcare sector in Europe. But I feel that a formal
education in management and exposure to different sectors of the corporate sector is necessary for growth in my
career in consultancy.

IIM Bangalore’s formalized management program will help me in further developing managerial abilities,
understanding critical strategic business problems, and devising actionable solutions. Interaction with a diverse
batch profile through both classroom and project activities will help me further develop inter-personal skills and
gain diverse business perspectives. I believe that the management program at IIM Bangalore would give me a
strong platform to achieve my objective of working in a top international management consulting firm and hold
high positions of responsibility.

I cherish a dream of eventually starting my own consulting firm in some niche or specialized fields where my
wide experience in consultancy and technical knowledge will help me.
