I. Essay: Explain briefly and concise (2.5 points each)

1. Enumerate the examples of Hazards.

- The examples of hazards are the following:
 intersections, roundabouts and traffic lights;
 lane changing and overtaking; and
 actions by other road users that could affect you.

2. Discuss the System of Vehicle Control.

- The system of vehicle control is the method of driving described in this section is the safest
and most efficient way to drive a motor vehicle. The system of vehicle control is a series of
actions that drivers should follow when approaching any hazard.

3. Explain briefly in performing Cabin Drill.

- There are eight steps in performing Cabin Drill, first step is getting into the driver’s seat,
second is checking the handbrake if it’s firmly on, third is checking the seat whether its in
correct position and if not adjust it, fourth is checking all mirrors to make sure you have a good
view of areas behind and around the vehicle, fifth is to check the seatbelt if its in correct
position and fastened it, six step is to check all passengers fastened their seatbelts, seven is to
check the steering wheel if its in the correct position, and last but not the least is to check all
doors are securely closed.

4. What are the steps to be followed in performing starting-up drills?

- The steps to be followed in performing starting-up drills are (1) checking if the handbrake is
firmly on, (2) checking the gear level if its in neutral or if park if the vehicle is automatic, (3)
pressing down the clutch pedal, (4) turning the key to ignition, (5) check all gauges and warning
lights, (6) turning the key or push the start button to start engine, (7) rechecking all gauges and
warning lights again, and last step when in manual vehicle, release the clutch pedal.

5. How will you perform in Moving off in a manual vehicle?

- To perform in moving off in a manual vehicle, there are steps to be followed. First step, check
if the handbrake is on. Second step, you push the brake pedal down. Third step, you push the
clutch pedal down. Fourth step, you select first the gear. Fifth step, you check your mirrors for
traffic or for other hazards. Sixth step, you must indicate to signal your intention to move off.
Seventh step, release the brake pedal and gently push the accelerator pedal to appropriate
engine revs. Eighth step, you bring the clutch pedal up to the friction point, and hold your feet
still. Ninth, you must check your mirrors again and look over your right shoulder in order for
you to check if the road is clear. Tenth step is that when the road is now clear, release the
handbrake and then gently release the clutch pedal and apply smooth acceleration to move off.
And lastly the eleventh step, if necessary, cancel the indicator.

6. Moving off in an Automatic vehicle, explain.

- If this is your first attempt at driving, it’s important that you choose your location carefully.
Here are the things that you must do in moving off in an automatic vehicle, first is to check if
the handbrake is on. Second, push the brake pedal down. Third, selecting the drive gear
position. Fourth, you must check your mirrors for traffic. Fifth, you must indicate to signal your
intention to move off. Sixth, check your mirrors again and glance over your right shoulder to
check if the road is clear. Seventh step is to release the foot brake pedal and gently push the
accelerator pedal to increase engine revs by approximately 200 revs. And if the road is clear,
release the handbrake as you smoothly apply acceleration to move off. Lastly, if necessary,
cancel the indicator.

7. Uphill starts for Manual vehicles, discuss briefly.

- Here are the things that you must to uphill starts for manual vehicles, first is you must check if
the handbrake is firmly on. Second, push the clutch pedal down. Third, selecting the first gear
position. Fourth, you check your mirrors for traffic and you must indicate to signal your
intention to move off. Fifth, you should gently push the accelerator pedal to apply appropriate
engine revs about 1500-2000 RPM or more than on level ground. Sixth, you must gently release
the clutch pedal until the friction point is reached. Seventh, you must glance over your right
shoulder to check if the road is clear. Eighth, without moving your feet, you release the
handbrake. Lastly, gently release the clutch pedal as you apply little more acceleration until the
clutch pedal is fully released.

8. Changing up gears in a manual vehicle, explain.

- As we learn to drive a manual vehicle, we must know the suitable range of speeds for each
gear for us to avoid future accidents. In changing up gears in a manual vehicle first thing you
must do is to increase the speed of the vehicle until it is travelling at a speed appropriate to the
next higher gear. Next is to push the clutch pedal down and fully release the accelerator pedal at
the same time or you should not change gears with your foot on the accelerator. And then move
the gear lever to the next higher gear, making sure the clutch pedal is fully pressed down.
Subsequently, gently release the clutch pedal up to the friction point and at the same time press
the accelerator to give a little power to 'balance' engine and road speeds and then continue
releasing the clutch pedal until it is fully released. Then, repeat changing up gears until desired
gear is reached.

9. Changing down gears in a manual vehicle, explain.

- When changing down gears in a manual vehicle, you must decrease the speed of the vehicle
until it is travelling at a speed appropriate to the required lower gear. Then, push the clutch
pedal down and fully release the accelerator pedal. After that, move the gear lever to the
required lower gear and gently release the clutch pedal up to the friction point and at the same
time press the accelerator pedal to apply sufficient power to balance engine and road speeds.
Then, continue releasing the clutch pedal until it is fully released and after that repeat changing
down gears until the lowest desired gear or speed is reached.
10. What do you mean by leave the gear selector in drive when doing most general driving?
- Leave the gear selector in drive when doing most general driving means that the gears will be
automatically selected depending on the car's speed and how much pressure you put on the
accelerator pedal.

11. In stopping for a prolonged time can occur in many situations, what are those?
- In stopping for a prolonged time can occur in many situations such as at a level crossing, in a
line of traffic stopped at a busy intersection or when traffic lights have just turned to red.

12. How to stop a manual vehicle?

- If you want to stop a manual vehicle, first thing you must do is to select where you planning to
stop and then check your mirrors. After that, if necessary, signal your intention. Then, brake
smoothly and push the clutch pedal down, while keeping pressure on the brake pedal. Next
thing you must do is to change down gears. Always remember that do not use the gears to slow
down the vehicle but rather you should change down in gears as the vehicle slows down.

13. What is prohibited on your vehicle if the stop is for a prolonged time?
- Using the gears to slow down the vehicle is prohibited on your vehicle if the stop is for a
prolonged time, instead, you should change down in gears as the vehicle slows down.

14. As you are slowing and changing down gears, what will you do on your vehicle?
- As you are slowing and changing down gears, always remember that you should change down
in gears as the vehicle slows down.

15. How will you do in driving out of a parallel park?

- In driving out of a parallel park, you must check that the front wheels of your vehicle are
facing straight ahead and the check your mirrors for other vehicles or pedestrians. Next is
reverse very slowly in the space available and check your mirrors and signal right to show your
intention to move off. And then when it is safe, start moving off by turning the steering wheel to
the right and drive slowly out of the parking space.

16. What are prohibited or not be made when you attempt to U-turns?
- U-turns are prohibited when you attempt to do it at or near traffic lights, unless there is a 'U-
turn permitted' sign or where a sign prohibits U-turns and where the other road users could be
inconvenienced

17. What are the steps to be observed in driving into an angle park?
- The steps to be observed in driving into an angle park are the following, first is to select a
parking space and then check your mirrors and signal your intention to park. After that brake
and change down gears as required to arrive at the turn-in point slowly, when you have a clear
view into the parking space, either stop, or, if safe to do so, slowly proceed. Then turn the
steering wheel quickly and enter the parking space in the middle between side marking lines.
Subsequently, straighten the steering wheel and drive straight ahead very slowly. Stop before
the front bumper of your vehicle goes over the kerb line but after the rear bumper is fully within
the parking bay. Lastly, apply the handbrake and secure your vehicle.
18. What would be the position of the wheels, when the car is park on the left kerb facing
uphill?
- The position of the wheels is turned to right so that the front wheels will hold the car in
position if it starts rolling backward, and the first gear should be engaged and the parking brake
firmly applied.

19. What would be the position of the wheels, when the car is park on the left kerb facing
downhill?
- The position of the wheels is turned to left so that the front wheels will hold the car in position
if it starts rolling forward, and the reverse gear should be engaged and the parking brake firmly
applied.

20. What are the fundamentals of driving?

- The fundamentals of driving are driving steering which means turning the steering wheel
while the vehicle is not moving. Then the friction point that refers to the clutch and accelerator
position at which engine power and the transmission engage. Next is the feathering the clutch
which is used to describe a method of controlling a vehicle's movement using the clutch during
low-speed manoeuvres, such as parking. Also, the coasting, this is when a vehicle is moving
and the engine is not connected to the driving wheels. Then the sideways pitch or roll sideways
pitch, it is the amount a vehicle leans to one side when going around a corner or bend, and lastly
the lurch which refer on how much a vehicle pitches forward or backwards.
