Maria was running late for school again. As she hurried across the playground, she passed

another girl just as some of the books in a large stack she was carrying slipped out of her grasp and

fell to the ground. Maria stopped to help the girl pick up the books. The girl thanked Maria, and both

of them ran into the building, barely making it to class on time. Later that afternoon, a new student

was brought into class. The teacher asked for a volunteer to be the new student's buddy for the next

few days. Being a buddy to a new student took a lot of time, but when no one else raised their hand,

Maria volunteered. The new student, who was starting to feel self-conscious and embarrassed that she

was going to have to inconvenience someone, was very grateful. The following day, as Maria was on

her way to lunch, she witnessed two girls bullying a smaller girl at their lockers. Maria stopped.

"Leave her alone," Maria said. "Or you will have to deal with both of us." The two bullies respected

Maria, and they knew everyone else at school did too. They did not want to make an enemy of Maria,

so they stopped picking on the smaller girl. 15 "Thank you so much!" the smaller girl told Maria. The

following week, Maria was sick, and started to fall behind in her work. When they heard what was

happening, everyone wanted to help. The girl whose books Maria has stopped to pick up, who was in

Maria's classes, got her school assignments. The new student to whom Maria had been a buddy, who

lived down the street from Maria, took her the work. The small girl whom Maria had saved from the

bullies visited Maria several times and cheered her up.

What is the theme of the story?
