A Brief Lesson Plan in English 7

I. Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
A. unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words through context clues;
B. identify the elements of a short story ;
C. give meaningful comments and insightful observations based on ideas presented in a
selection;
D. create a comic strip showing another ending of the story; and
E. work together to use their knowledge in the given varied tasks.

III. Procedure:
Daily Routine
Everybody will stand and will pray.
Before taking their seats, students will arrange their chairs properly and the teacher
will check the attendance.

The teacher will ask volunteers to fill up the concept map.

B. ANALYSIS
 CONNECTION OF THE ACTIVITY
The teacher will ask a question which will lead to the short story that depicts one
of the Filipino traditions titled “The Wedding Dance” by Amador Daguio.
What if one of what you’ve written is missing, will the word “family” still stand?
Or will it collapse?

 BACKROUND OF THE AUTHOR


The teacher will give a brief background about the author.

 VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
1. Before the story is introduced to the students, the teacher will present unfamiliar
words found in the story.
2. The students determine the meaning of the words with the use of sentences.
Words:
1. Threshold – (noun) The sill of a door
Sentence: Awiyao reached the head-high threshold of their house.

2. Gangsa – (noun) A bronze-silver gong peculiar to the ethnic groups of the


mountains of Northern Luzon
Sentence: She heard the rich sound of the gangsas from the gathering outside.

3. Ember – (noun) A glowing fragment of a fire


Sentence: The ember of the bonfire casted playful shadows of Lumnay on the walls
of the bamboo house.

4. Pang – (noun) A sudden sharp sensation or feeling


Sentence: As he stepped out from the house, Awiyao felt a pang in his chest.

5. Sonorous – (adjective) Loud, deep or rich in sound


Sentence: She was already far from house, yet she could still hear the sonorous
gongs.

C. ABSTRACTION
1. The students will read the story.
2. After they read the text, the students are asked with the following guide
questions:

a. Who are the characters in the story? Who are they?


b. Do Awiyao and Lumnay have similar culture to us?
c. Why did Awiyao have to leave Lumnay?
d. What are the expectations for men in Awiyao’s culture? What about for
women?
e. Do you think what Awiyao did was right?
f. If you were Awiyao, would you do the same? Why or why not?
g. How does your culture influence your decisions? Does it affect your
plans for your future?
h. Is it true that love conquers all? When might this be untrue?

3. The teacher will discuss the elements of a short story.

D. POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS
1. The teacher will divide the class into groups, the number of groups depend on
how many groups the teacher wants. ^__^

Task 1: THE PLOT


 The students will fill out the pyramid showing the series of events in the story.
Task 2: COMIC STRIP

 The students will create a comic strip showing another possible ending of the
story.

Task 3: MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

Group1: You Can Dance!


The students will perform a dance of the natives in the story
accompanied by an audio of gangsa.

Group 2: Sing It!


The students will express the feeling of Lumnay through singing. The
students will compose their own lyric but they can get a tune from any
song.

Group 3: Lights, Camera, Action!


The students will act the story, they can use sound effects if they want
to. Since the story is hanging, they can also add their ideal ending to
wrap the masterpiece of Amador Daguio.

Group 4: Illustrate It!


The students will create a poster showing the prevailing tradition in the
story amidst the love of Awiyao and Lumnay.

Group 5: Oh my dear prosecutor!


The students will do a mock trial in a court.
Aside from the three main characters, one student will act as a lawyer
that defends the separation of Awiyao and Lumnay, one student will act
as a prosecutor that defends the side of Lumnay, and another student
will act as the chief justice. The other will act as an audience.
