Atomic Absorption: Technology
Principal:
Samples are volatized by heat. Elements in a sample are measured by
light absorption. Each atom has a unique light absorption signature.

Ground State Excited State

Lamp
Monochromator Quantitation
 Hollow Cathode
Lamp (HCL) &Detector
 Electrode-Less
Discharge Lamp
(EDL) Sample is heated to produce atoms
Atoms are excited by light
Or Different lamp for each element
(some multi-element lamps)
Flame Graphite Furnace
Energy absorbed by atom excitation is
measured
Sample Quantitation is done by standard curve

7
Atomic Absorption: Characteristics

Determine concentrations of metals in solution

Elemental coverage with AAS
67 elements

From ppb to % levels

Precision typically better than 1 % RSD

Some sample preparation required

– typically acid digestion

Instrument is easy to “tune”

Instrument is easy to operate

Technique is very specific

Agilent’s Fast Sequential Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Boost productivity and slash running costs

Fast Sequential achieves the speed of sequential ICP-

OES, without the need for switching valve accessories.

Increase • 10 elements in < 2 minutes

Productivity

Reduce Running • Reduces gas and sample

Costs consumption

High Sensitivity • >0.9 Abs for 5 mg/L Cu

• SpectrAA software
Easy to use • SIPS

11
Fast Sequential AA Vs Conventional

Using Fast Sequential mode, samples are only aspirated once, with all elements being measured
before the next sample is aspirated

Conventional AA determines only one element from each sample aspiration, so samples are
analyzed time and time again during a multi-element sequence

12
How Fast Sequential Works

All lamps operated simultaneously

• Eliminates lamp warm-up delays

Fast lamp selection using motor

driven mirror

High speed wavelength drive

• 2000mm/sec speed

Instantaneous gas flow changes

• All elements measured under
optimum conditions

SpectrAA software optimizes

measurement time

SIPS – Sample Introduction Pumping System

Eliminate tedious sample preparation

The Sample Introduction Pump System can increase

productivity and simplify sample preparation

Eliminate sample • Calibrate from just 1

preparation standard

Minimize sample • Over range samples are

re-runs automatically diluted

Simplify sample • Automatic spiking and

preparation modifier addition

Available as SIPS 10 (1 pump) and SIPS 20 (2 pumps)
