Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a highly essential approach to assisting people who
are stressed, shocked, troubled, and enervated by dramatic events such as adversities,
catastrophes, public health emergency, pandemic, etc.
Dr. Liza Firestone in her article titled The Importance of Psychological First Aid in
Japan highlighted that PFA “does not require a professional to carry out the steps of care.
The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with

Reflecting on the videos,

Psychological First Aid is an evidence – informed modular approach to help children,

adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism.
Psychological First Aid is designed to reduce the initial distress caused by traumatic
events and to foster short and long term adaptive functioning and coping.
As a teacher, we must know how to conduct PFA for practical assistance, connect to
social support and link with services. A teacher must be a facilitator and must have skills
needed as facilitator and has a communication skills. The main role of a teacher as a
facilitator is to provide the opportunity and guide the process of self-reflection and learning.
The teachers must shows qualities unconditional positive regards and a belief in the ability
of survivors to cope. Encourages survivors to help themselves and make their own
decisions rather than imposing solutions.
Psychological First Aid must be conducted prior to the start of the classes for a reason
that it is an initial disaster response intervention with the goal to promote safety, stabilize
survivors of disasters and connect individuals to help and resources. Psychological First
