Ideal Gas Law/ Perfect Gas Law
• Gases are highly compressible in comparison to liquids, with
changes in gas density directly related to changes in pressure and
temperature through the equation
𝑃𝑎𝑏𝑠 = 𝑃𝑔 + 𝑃𝑎𝑡𝑚

• where p is the absolute pressure, ρ the density, T the absolute

temperature, and R is a gas constant.
• Thus, the absolute pressure can be obtained from the gage
pressure by adding the value of the atmospheric pressure.

Compressibility of Fluids
A property that is commonly used to characterize compressibility is the
bulk modulus, 𝐸𝜐 , defined as

Note: A high bulk modulus means that a substance is less compressible, but a low
bulk modulus means that the substance is more compressible

Surface Tension
• The intensity of the molecular attraction per unit length along any line in the
surface is called the surface tension and is designated by the Greek symbol
𝜎 (sigma).
• For a given liquid the surface tension depends on temperature as well as the
other fluid it is in contact with at the interface.
