Objectives:
At the end of discussions, students will be able to:
1. Define the word speaking.
2. Understand the importance of speaking.
3. Identify ways before speaking.
Introduction:
Language is the means of thinking and transferring culture from one generation to
another. It is also the means of communication among human.
English becoming the international language in the world, used in communication,
commerce, advertising and even transmitting technology. As a matter of fact, English
become an important asset for anyone that seeks employment in business and industry.
English is the global language of business. More and more multinational companies are
mandating English as the corporate language.
Speaking is one of the five (5) language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking
and viewing). It is the means of communicating with others, expressing opinions, thoughts,
intensions, and views. Speaking is frequently used language skill. We’re using it in our daily
lives. Whenever or wherever we go, it’s always there, even in the past up to present, it is
very useful. As Rivers (1981), speaking is used as twice as much as reading and writing in
our communication.
Discussion Proper:
In this discussion, we are going to the tackle about speaking, speaking skills when
do we need to speak, importance of speaking skills.
What is speaking? Speaking is the ability to encode thoughts and concepts into oral
form. Speaking is the act of making sounds. We can also say that speaking is expressing
one’s thought and feelings in spoken language. When we speak, we conveys information
about our surroundings, news or the latest happenings in our world. Speaking is the
delivery of language through the mouth. To speak, we create sounds using many parts of
our body including lungs, vocal tract and the vocal chords.
When do we need to speak? When should be the time to open our mouth and say
something? We have the freedom to talk and express ourselves by telling what’s on our
mind, what do we feel, what we think, our opinions on something, point of view on a topic
and so on. Here are some of the example when to speak:
a) Class group discussions
b) Group task work
c) Seminars and presentations
d) Question and Answer in lectures
e) One to one sessions
Importance of Speaking
a) Most obvious & interactive skills
b) Develops understanding through communication skills
c) Develop inter personal skills
d) Used in assessment
e) Ability to inform, persuade, and direct
f) Ability to stand out from the rest
g) Ability to benefit derivatively
h) Career enhancement
i) Personal satisfaction
Two types of Speaking
1. Formal Speaking - It occurs in business or academic situations, or when meeting
people for the first time.
- Combines appropriate grammar and phrases.
- Used in professional setting like business trips and meetings.
- Used when you want to stress a point or convey authority.
2. Informal Speaking- Typically used with the family, friends, or people you know well.
- Carefree way of speaking
- Used of slang
- If you want to get to know someone on a mere personal level.
What to do before speaking?
1. Be an active listener.
2. Be quick organizer of thoughts.
3. Structure your speech in your mind.
Conclusion
Unlike a written text where we can read again the information, a speaker need to
speak the word. This words cannot be deleted. Listener’s has no opportunity to capture the
words that have been said. All words coming from our mouth should be deliver it correctly.
Our mouth was powerful. We should think first before we say anything because if we
already uttered the words, you cannot remove it.
While speaking consider these things:
 When we speak, we write what we are saying in the air.- Joseph Joubert
 Speak kindly; our words become reality.
 Words have incredible power. They can make people’s heart soar or they can make
