ANALYTICAL BALANCE OUTLINE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTS SERVE THE NEEDS OF
 The analytical balance MANY FIELDS:
 Errors in weighing
 General rules in weighing
 Calculating uncertainty in weighing

Student Learning Objectives

 Describe the mechanism of how the Analytical Balance
measures the weight of an object
 Identify the source of error in weighing an object using
the analytical balance
 Practice the correct usage of the Analytical balance in the
performance of the Gravimetry experiment procedure

ANALYTICAL BALANCE

what is analytical balance?

 The most widely used type of analytical balances are

balances with a capacity of 100g and a sensitivity of
0.1 mg.
 Analytical balance are instruments used for precise
determining mass of matter.
 Analytical balances are sensitive and expensive
instruments, and upon their accuracy and precision
the accuracy of analysis result depends.
 The measuring pan of an analytical balance (0.1 mg
or better) is inside a transparent enclosure with doors
so that dust does not collect and so any air currents in
the room do not affect the balance’s operation.
 This enclosure of often called a draft shield.
 The use of mechanically vented balance safety
enclosure, which has uniquely designed acrylic
airfoils, allows a smooth turbulence-free airflow that
prevents balance fluctuation and the measure of mass
down to 1 ug without fluctuations or loss of product
