 Grandma, what did you look like when

you a were little girl?

I was blonde and I use to have

Long hair, just like you.

And what were you like?

I used to be playful and talkative.

What about you, grandpa?

I used to be very shy.

Whenever a stranger came to our house,

I would hide in a closet

Did you use to have lots of fun when you were kids?

When I was a child, I used to play hide and seek with my brother and my sister

It was my favorite game

I would also jump the rope with my friends

And we would often play “moms and dads”

As kids. We played outdoors a lot

We also liked playing hopscotch

We used to draw the squares on the ground with chalk

Kids still play these games! That´s unbelievable!

What about you, grandpa?

My brother and I would spend the day walking around the neighborhood

Visiting other kids on the block and playing games.

We used to have wooden scooters and we would ride them every day.

Sometimes we would make paper planes.

I have a scooter, too and I can also make paper planes!

That´s great

Did you have any fairy tale books?

Yes, sometimes my mother would read us some tales before going to sleep.

But we didn´t have too many books.

Did you like any sport when you were kids?

I used take ballet classes, because I wanted to be a ballerina

I used to play baseball. I was good at it and used to be selected

As the number one player. I was popular among my peers.

What was school like when you were kids?

I really want to know.

Well, students used to respect their teachers

Very much. We would always obey them.

I can remember mrs Elizabeth, my 3rd grade teacher, very well.

When we arrived each morning she would sit at her desk.

She would always smile and say hello to each student as they entered

When the bell rang, she would stand up and clear her throat.

That meant we were supposed to be quiet, so that the class could start.

Teachers were usually very strict

If the children were naughty,l they had to stand in the corner.

Our teachers would even hit our palms with a ruler.

That must have hurt quite a lot

Yes, it did…

Did you wear uniforms?

 No, we didn´t use to wear uniforms.

We used to wear our everyday clothes to school.

Was there a cafeteria in your school?

No, the schools did not use to offer lunch to students.

Every student would carry their own food and water from home.

But I bet you didn´t have homework when you were in school, did you?

Students used to have homework, back then, too.

Really? Wow..

Did you use to walk to school?

Yes, I used to walk to school with my siblings

Because we lived close to the school.

My school was not close to my home, so I would go by bus.

Did you use to have a smartphone or a computer?

No, of course not. There were no smartphones or computers back then.

Really? Then how did you use to contact your friends and relatives?

We used to go to a phone booth with lots of coins.

Or we would write letters…..

But it would take days before they were delivered.

Life seemed hard without technology

We used to have a record player.

We would listen to our favorite songs.

What about tv?

We had a black and white tv

I remember we would sit in front of the tv in the evenings, watching movies.

What did you use to eat when you were kids?

 During summertime, we would eat lots of fresh

Vegetables and fruits, as well as milk and cheese.

During wintertime, we would eat potatoes, beans, canned fruits and pickles, rice and

Oats, meat and eggs.

I know there were no supermarkets then. Where did you use to buy your food?

There used to be small grocery stores in town where you could buy food.

Was there ice cream when you were kids? What about cola?

Yes, there used to be ice cream and soda counters in the stores.

Your childhood was really beautiful and interesting!

Yes, I miss my childhood so much!

We used to be happy!
 Abuela, ¿cómo te veías cuando

¿Eres una niña pequeña?

Yo era rubia y solía tener

Pelo largo, como tú.

¿Y tú cómo eras?

Solía ser juguetón y hablador.

¿Y tú, abuelo?

Yo solía ser muy tímido.

Cada vez que un extraño venía a nuestra casa,

me escondería en un armario

¿Te divertías mucho cuando eras niño?

Cuando era niño, solía jugar a las escondidas con mi hermano y mi hermana.

era mi juego favorito

yo también saltaría la cuerda con mis amigos

Y a menudo jugábamos a “mamá y papá”

De niños. jugamos mucho al aire libre

También nos gustaba jugar a la rayuela

Solíamos dibujar los cuadrados en el suelo con tiza.

¡Los niños todavía juegan estos juegos! ¡Eso es increíble!

¿Y tú, abuelo?

Mi hermano y yo pasábamos el día paseando por el barrio.

Visitar a otros niños en el bloque y jugar juegos.

 Solíamos tener scooters de madera y los montábamos todos los días.

A veces hacíamos aviones de papel.

¡También tengo un scooter y también puedo hacer aviones de papel!

Eso es genial

¿Tenías algún libro de cuentos de hadas?

Sí, a veces mi madre nos leía algunos cuentos antes de dormir.

Pero no teníamos demasiados libros.

¿Te gustaba algún deporte cuando eras niño?

Solía tomar clases de ballet, porque quería ser bailarina.

Solía jugar béisbol. Yo era bueno en eso y solía ser seleccionado

Como el jugador número uno. Yo era popular entre mis compañeros.

¿Cómo era la escuela cuando erais niños?

Tengo muchas ganas de saber.

Bueno, los estudiantes solían respetar a sus maestros.

Mucho. Siempre les obedeceríamos.

Puedo recordar muy bien a la Sra. Elizabeth, mi maestra de tercer grado.

Cuando llegábamos cada mañana, ella se sentaba en su escritorio.

Ella siempre sonreía y saludaba a cada estudiante cuando entraban

Cuando sonaba la campana, se ponía de pie y se aclaraba la garganta.

Eso significaba que se suponía que debíamos estar callados, para que la clase pudiera comenzar.

Los profesores solían ser muy estrictos.

Si los niños eran traviesos, tenían que pararse en la esquina.

Nuestros maestros incluso golpeaban nuestras palmas con una regla.

Eso debe haber dolido bastante

Sí lo hizo…

¿Llevabas uniformes?
 No, no solíamos usar uniformes.

Solíamos llevar nuestra ropa de todos los días a la escuela.

¿Había una cafetería en tu escuela?

No, las escuelas no solían ofrecer almuerzo a los estudiantes.

Cada estudiante llevaría su propia comida y agua desde casa.

Pero apuesto a que no tenías tarea cuando estabas en la escuela, ¿verdad?

Los estudiantes solían tener deberes, en ese entonces, también.

¿En serio? Guau..

¿Solías caminar a la escuela?

Sí, solía caminar a la escuela con mis hermanos.

Porque vivíamos cerca de la escuela.

Mi escuela no estaba cerca de mi casa, así que iba en autobús.

¿Solías tener un teléfono inteligente o una computadora?

No claro que no. No había teléfonos inteligentes ni computadoras en ese entonces.

¿En serio? Entonces, ¿cómo solía ponerse en contacto con sus amigos y familiares?

Solíamos ir a una cabina telefónica con muchas monedas.

O escribiríamos cartas…..

Pero pasarían días antes de que fueran entregados.

La vida parecía difícil sin tecnología

Solíamos tener un tocadiscos.

Escucharíamos nuestras canciones favoritas.

¿Qué pasa con la televisión?

Teníamos una televisión en blanco y negro.

Recuerdo que nos sentábamos frente a la televisión por las noches, viendo películas.

¿Qué solían comer cuando eran niños?

 Durante el verano, comíamos muchos alimentos frescos

Verduras y frutas, así como leche y queso.

Durante el invierno, comíamos papas, frijoles, frutas enlatadas y encurtidos, arroz y

Avena, carne y huevos.

Sé que entonces no había supermercados. ¿Dónde solías comprar tu comida?

Solía haber pequeñas tiendas de comestibles en la ciudad donde podías comprar comida.

¿Había helado cuando erais niños? ¿Qué pasa con la cola?

Sí, solía haber mostradores de helados y refrescos en las tiendas.

¡Tu infancia fue realmente hermosa e interesante!

¡Sí, extraño tanto mi infancia!

¡Solíamos ser felices!
