A Study about Stress and Coping strategies of BS AMT students in PATTS College of

Aeronautics

INTRODUCTION

In our daily Academic life we will always encounter burnout and stress, as students we
tend to find solutions or entertainment to distract ourselves from stress. Students not only have
to deal with a bigger academic workload, but they are expected to function socially, plan
financially, and deal with living away from home for the first time. Statistics reveal a concerning
truth, student stress is real, and, in some cases, may be on par with the stress that adults deal
with. The physical and mental demands of studies often increase proportionally to a student’s
progress (Reddy et al., 2018). Additionally, external factors such as family life, finances, friends,
and mental health may either provide a supporting role or an additional distraction to studying
(Lian, 2018).

Background of the Study

Stress are normal parts of each individual’s life specially when you are in college, A
student’s life is subjected to different kinds of stressors, such as the pressure of academics with
an obligation of success, uncertain future and difficulties envisaged for integration into the
system. These students face social, emotional, physical and family problems which may affect
their learning ability and academic performance (Shaikh et.al, 2004). Some of them find it hard
to cope with the stress and lag behind, while others see the pressure as a challenge to work
harder. Stress can lead to disruptions in both physical and mental health. Stress reduction and
adopting a healthier lifestyle have been major concerns of the students (Striker et.al., 1999). The
importance of awareness about the stress level has a major effect on one’s mental and physical
capacity (Hargreaves, 1998).

A variety of mental processes, behaviors, and emotional management techniques are

highlighted by coping mechanisms. This indicates that coping is based on a person's
psychological reaction to stress, their assessments of events, their attention, and their desired
goals or outcomes. The social circumstances and interpersonal connections also influence
coping. Adolescence involves a variety of coping mechanisms, including seeking out social
support, problem-solving, diversion, emotionally focused problem-solving, and self-reliance.
The drive to perform, the competition for grades, the fear of failure, the choice of a job, peer
interactions, and many other components of the college environment are real-life obstacles that
will cause mental stress in students (Baqutayan, Shadiya, Mohemed) (2012).
Statement of the Problem

The mental health of college students has been a growing concern in recent years
(Milojevich and Lukowski, 2016). As an observation, students of PATTS College of Aeronautics,
especially BS AMT Students, tend to complain about their sentiments in their academic life and
how it contributes to their stress. For almost two years of being in an online setup due to the
pandemic, we generate or create different coping mechanisms either healthy or unhealthy. We
want to know what causes their stress, does stress affect their academics and what are their
coping techniques, is it healthy and helpful.

To specifically answer the following questions:

1. How do BS AMT students cope up with stress?

2. What causes their stress?
3. How does stress affect academic performance of BS AMT students ?

Hypothesis

What causes stress among BS AMT Students and what are their coping mechanisms?

mental health resulting to negative coping strategies . The study claims that there might be
different coping strategies that can help BS AMT students of PATTS College of Aeronautics.

different stress a student can face in this year's hybrid face to face classes and to know what are
the different coping strategies and mechanisms of our schoolmates. Stress is very common
among BS AMT students. Chronic stress has multiple negative mental and physical health
consequences. There are different kinds of stress According to the American Psychological
