SmartStyle Salons

1. Jamika’s positive characteristics are that she is hard-working, has good technical skills, good work relationships,
and encourages talented staff by providing promotions. Jamika’s negative characteristics are that she has poor
human skills, ineffective communication skills, can't control her temper, and limits her staff's ability to lead
because she worries that they will replace her in her position.

2. Her positive characteristics help to get her to top position because people want to work for her and these are
seen as positive to the corporation to see her as a potential for promotion. Her negative characteristics hinder her
in that she lets her employees get away with certain things and she needs to control her behavior.

3. - With Marianne, she needs to slow down, listen to what Marianne is saying, and instruct her on what she needs
to do, not express her anger to Marianne. - With Holly and Carol Jean, they shouldn’t have been allowed to get
away with some of the inappropriate behavior before, which wouldn’t have led to them both calling in at the same
time. Jamika should develop a policy of not letting two employees quit at the same time. - The situation with
Victoria was handled well in the beginning. It’s ok to let your assistant handle things if you have duties to do.
Although, she shouldn’t have agreed to Victoria handled it then change her mind and go out of the office with the
attitude she had.

More hassle from HR?

1. It appears from the conversation between Gary and Vitorio that Connie and her staff are not on the right track
to avoid manager mishaps. The new set of leader rules and core values appears to be from business school text
books according to Gary and Vitorio. It would be better to involve people from middle management rather than
the top-down approach in this case. Also Connie should hear their opinions

2. Yes, I do think that a more participative and open culture can be imposed on managers with value statements
and training sessions, so that employees can show their full potential.

3. Vitorio and Gary are on the defensive because the company fired a few of their employees and they have been
called for a meeting on new policies about leader competencies. The defensive on core leadership should be
handled in a different way. It should be more interactive and participative. Connie should allow Gary and Vitorio to
express their views and suggestions they have for the company’s new set of leader rules and core values. (Because
the company fired some employee before, so they are defensive. We should make it more comfortable to make G-
V can express their views and suggestion)

We Want More Guitars!

1. - Adam is not completely accurate in his analysis of Guitarras Dominguez. He is not respecting their social values,
is too focused on productivity, and is overlooking how important craftsmanship is. On the other hand, he still have
some concerns and solutions for Guitarras Dominguez

- I think productivity and craftsmanship are compatible because a company could not survive without productivity
or craftsmanship. If the products have good craftsmanship but poor productivity, it will lead to negative
consequences. The same as good productivity but low-quality products

2. Adam is from a highly assertive culture and Guitarras Dominguez culture is laid-back

3. Adam should focus on incorporating a flexible work schedule to make everybody happy
Central City Museum!

1I prefer the goal addressed by the university administrator. It is important in my opinion that the
community, as well as the university students have access to the museum. The university is offering the
land and will cover annual operating expenses if it can be used as a tool for its students. Yet the building
was constructed from funds gathered by donors in the community. As director, I would make it my goal
to stick to this plan. It would be very important to me that the museum contribute to the community
and the university, as both contributed to the existence of the museum

2. The way I resolved the conflict over who the museum should be for was pretty simple. I will inform
the stakeholders that the museum should be used to the benefit of all involved. I will make a plan to
allow the museum to be open to the public and I welcome university students to use the museum for
research and study.

3. Yes, it is very important to build an alliance to find the difference between the stakeholders. If
managers focus only on a plan without resolving conflicts among stakeholders, conflicts can even arise.
If the curator makes the museum strictly for college graduates, donors may be disappointed. Everyone
may have different points of view, but a manager's job is to resolve conflicts and decide which goals will
be in the best interest of the company.

The Office!

1. Mitchell only thought about his own point of view, he did not care about Acklen’s. When in the case
he mentions that he did not care about Acklen’s objection to the decision and that the decision was final
he demonstrated overconfidence and misused of authority, a good manager should be a good listener.
The way he approached the situation demonstrated improper communication he did not think he
needed to consult with Acklen and kept her out making the decision, demanding without thinking in
possible outcomes. He should have been more open to her feedback, even if a better solution could not
be found.

2. If I was Mitchell, I should’ve bringing Krista into the conversation, brainstorming with her, trying to
find a solution, even though the solution was not much different than sharing the office space, but at
least Acklen would have felt that she was brought into being part of the decision making and it would be
considered a mutual agreement, since at the end, the final decision had to be communicated by Acklen
to her team and she would have feel respected

3. Acklen does not have many options in regards to his decision. I think Acken should have responded in
a more professional way. Mitchell’s approach was not the best, instead of getting into an argument, she
should have thought about it and let him know that he should have included her into the discussion with
the Major. But now, that the decision is final, she should accept it and brainstorm with Joanne on how
to make the office space comfortable for both teams and let Mitchell know that in the future she would
like to be part of decision-making for situations that affect her team.
