MAINTENANCE ALERT
SUBJECT: OXYGEN GENERATOR INSPECTION

MODELS AFFECTED: SERIAL NUMBERS AFFECTED:

PA-46-310P Malibu All
PA-46-350P Mirage/M350 All
PA-46-500TP Meridian/M500 All
PA-46-600TP M600 All

COMPLIANCE TIME: Initial inspection to occur upon reaching 50 hours time in service (TIS). Thereafter,
a recurring inspection shall take place at intervals not to exceed 100 hours TIS,
unless otherwise specified in the applicable maintenance manual.

APPROVAL: The engineering aspects of this service document have been shown to comply
with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and are FAA approved.

PURPOSE: The chemical oxygen generators that are installed in the affected aircraft
are supplied from the manufacturer with a protective cover installed over the
percussion cap, to prevent inadvertent activation during shipping, storage and
handling. Once installed on the aircraft, the protective cover is removed, arming
the system.
However, any subsequent maintenance or replacement of the oxygen generator
provides an opportunity for a protective cover to inadvertently remain on the
oxygen generator when returned to service. An oxygen generator in this condition
may fail to function as intended, should an event occur that requires use of oxygen
by passengers or crew.
This service letter provides instructions for the recurring inspection of all chemical
oxygen generators to ensure that the protective cover has been removed and the
generators are in safe operating condition.
NOTE: The latest revision of the Piper Airplane Maintenance Manual (AMM)
for the latert Mirage and M350, Meridian, M500, and M600 airplanes
already contains the technical content in this service letter. However,
some earlier aircraft were delivered with an AMM that does not contain
these important service instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS:

WARNING: FAILURE TO CONSULT APPLICABLE VENDOR PUBLICATION(S), WHEN SERVICING OR

INSPECTING VENDOR EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN PIPER AIRCRAFT, MAY RENDER THE
AIRCRAFT UNAIRWORTHY. (SEE INTRODUCTION - SUPPLEMENTARY PUBLICATIONS.)
NOTE: Take care when handling oxygen generators. Even though they are not under high pressure, they
generate very high temperatures when activated. Inadvertent ignition may occur if they are not handled
with care. Oxygen generators have a percussion cap igniter which must be protected with a plastic
cover whenever they are removed from the mounting tray/drawer. Do not remove this plastic cover
until the generator is installed/reinstalled in the mounting tray/drawer, and the system is rearmed.
1. Locate the oxygen generators, which are installed in trays or drawers under the copilot seat and the aft facing
passenger seat directly behind the copilot seat. A typical arrangement is shown in Figure 1. The number and
placement of oxygen generators within these two locations will vary by aircraft model and serial number.
2. Inspect each firing pin and hammer. If firing pin has been pulled and hammer is in contact with percussion cap,
consider the generator to be expended and replace.
3. For units which have not been expended, inspect each percussion cap:
a. Verify that the plastic protective cover shown in Figure 2 has been removed from each percussion cap.
Remove any plastic protective covers that are present.
b. If the normally smooth surface of the percussion cap exhibits any evidence of indentation, replace the
generator.
4. Check each generator for security within its mounting points.
5. Check each generator for any obvious physical damage (i.e. - punctures, dents, deep scratches, etc.). If damage
present, replace generator.
CAUTION: DO NOT PULL ON THE LANYARD. THE GENERATOR MAY IGNITE IF THE LANYARD IS
PULLED.
6. Check lanyard cords for fraying and security at both ends.
7. Check oxygen lines for security of connections to mask and generator outlet fitting. Verify that each mask
lanyard and oxygen line are connected to the same generator.
8. Check the date of manufacture on the manufacturer’s data plate of each oxygen generator. If the date is 10
years or older, replace the generator.
9. Make a logbook entry documenting compliance with this service letter.
