I. English Month Contests


GRADE 7 - BOOK CHARACTER PARADE CONTEST
DESCRIPTION: Participants pretend to be the book characters and introduce their characters they portray on the video.

OBJECTIVES:

- Students will have the opportunity to showcase their costumes, characters and talents in the Book Character
Parade Contest.
- To promote the excitement and love of reading while having fun.

MECHANICS:

1. This contest is open to all Junior High School of Balara High School.
2. Participants must submit ONLY ONE entry or video.
3. Each entry shall be a representation of a famous character from any popular book or movie.
4. Entries must be sent to maryann.baladad@depedqc.ph on or before November 15, 2021.
5. Participants are encouraged not to spend money on costumes, but rather be imaginative or creative. (Use what
is available at home.)
6. Cash prizes and gift items await everyone who will participate.
7. Last submission of entries will be on November 15, 2021

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:

*Each non-winning contestants will receive a Certificate of Recognition

GRADE 8- DECLAMATION CONTEST

DESCRIPTION: Declamation Contest is a public speaking event that showcases student declaimers’ communication
prowess in interpreting a literary piece, thereby providing the audience with a direct experience of the craft.

OBJECTIVES:

- recite a declamation piece with proper pausing, intonation and rhythm with proper facial expression as well
- help improve the student’s diction and stage presence in artistic and creative way

MECHANICS:

1. Participants shall be given a declamation piece deliverable in five (5) minutes or less.
2. Participants shall memorize their piece, record their delivery and submit their recordings to the
committee assigned.
3. Participants shall be in an appropriate costume and shall use props whenever necessary.
4. Upon submission of the results to the committee, judges’ decision shall be considered final and
irrevocable.
5. Only three (3) student declaimers shall be awarded as Champion, 1st Runner-Up, and 2nd Runner-Up.

CRITERIA:

1. Overall Interpretation (40%). The student declaimer demonstrates mastery of the piece through
expressive interpretation and provides the audience with a direct experience of the masterfully crafted
literature.
2. Vocal Aspects (40%). The student declaimer employs vocal effects such as varying tone, pitch, volume,
and others to reinforce powerful interpretation of the piece.
3. Costume and Props (10%). The student declaimer wears a costume and uses props required in the
development of the presented discourse.
4. Audience Impact (10%). The student declaimer succeeds in engaging the audience in the experience
through communicative approach.
5. Last submission of entries will be on November 22, 2021

First Place: 300-peso load and a Certificate of Recognition


Second Place: 200 peso-load and a Certificate of Recognition

Third Place: 100 peso-load and a Certificate of Recognition

GRADE 9- STORYTELLING CONTEST

DESCRIPTION: Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story
while encouraging the listener's imagination.

OBJECTIVES:

- tell a story with feeling and with facial expression taking note of correct intonation, pronunciation and proper
diction.
- build up the confidence to stand in front of the crowd and tell a story
- sharpen their presentation skills and to recall the sequence in a story

MECHANICS:

1. The contest is open to all Grade 9 students of Balara High School.


2. Each contestant is given a maximum of 3 minutes for the presentation of the story.
3. Time shall officially start when the contestant utters the first word of the presentation, a penalty of 1-point
deduction in every 30 seconds excess.
4. The presentation includes creativity skills and uses a variety of images from clip art, internet, and a digital source
such as digital camera or flip.
5. Appropriate attire with moral and ethical standards is required.
6. Send your entries to your English teachers. Last Submission will be on November 19, 2021 (Friday)
7. Judges’ decision is final.

GRADE 10- ORAL INTERPRETATION

DESCRIPTION: “Appreciation of poetry, prose, and drama through oral performance.”

OBJECTIVES:

- To perform aesthetic messages in prose and poetry


- To identify literary concepts that typify poetry and prose
- To recognize and explain concepts in the oral interpretation tradition
- To understand and identify narrative strategies of contemporary authors
- To expand performance rehearsal techniques and strategies.
- To expand performance critique skills.
- To extend and grow as a solo and ensemble performer.

MECHANICS:

1.The selected piece for the competition is “The Cultured Daughter of a Plain Grocer”.

2.The contestant shall present the source material in a creative 10-minute-video recording(maximum).

3.Props, costumes, digital sound effects and any kind of filter are NOT NECESSARY.

4.Acting the piece out is not necessary. On the other hand, the presenter should be able to portray all characters and
their emotions through variation of voices.

5.The speaker may change expressions or generate sounds through hands, body and voice; however, modification of
lines will not be allowed as respect to the author of the literary piece.

CRITERIA:

Projection of Characters (25%). The reader is able to portray all characters and 100% of their emotions in all parts of the
story.

Voice Quality (25%). The reader uses proper volume, tone variation, and timing to show expression and feelings of the
characters.

Pronunciation (20%). The reader pronounces all the sounds and words properly in the entire story.

Effectiveness (20%). Multiple techniques are used to artfully and successfully creat audience interest.

Audience Impact (10%). The reader connects well to audience.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL- BE THE SHS IDOL: SHS ONLINE QUIZ BEE
DESCRIPTION: Bee the SHS idols! Is a quiz bee aiming to refresh and assimilate our learnings in the subjects in English.

OBJECTIVES:
- This would provide an avenue for learners to recall on the concepts, competencies, and lessons in different SHS
Subjects in English while developing sportsmanship through friendly competition.

MECHANICS:

The Online English Quiz Bee is open to all Senior High School students in Balara High School.

A representative from each section will serve as players for the quiz bee.

The quiz bee shall be comprised of Elimination phase where questions will be given in multiple choices. The four players
with the highest points will proceed to the final phase where the questions will have no options.
The questions to be presented in the quiz bee will be from selected topics from English subjects in senior school such as
Media and information Literacy, English for Academic and Professional Purposes, and Oral Communication.

The goal of each a player is to accumulate the highest score by answering questions correctly. Each point represents
questions for each category. The higher the point, the more difficult the question is.

In the end of the elimination phase, the top four players shall proceed to the final phase where they can win the
following prizes.

1st Place – P 500 with certificate of recognition


2nd Place – P 300 with certificate of recognition
3rd Place – P 200 with certificate of recognition
4th Place – P 100 with certificate of recognition

TEACHER EDITION: PHOTO ESSAY


DESCRIPTION: A photographic essay is a form of visual storytelling, a way to present a narrative through a series of
images.

OBJECTIVES:

- able to evoke emotion and understanding without using words.


- deliver a story using a series of photographs and bring the viewer along your narrative journey.

MECHANICS:

1. The photo essay is open to all teachers of Balara High School.

2. Maximum of 5 photos in presenting your story through images.

3. The photos must concentrate on the topic “Day-in-the-life of a Teacher in the New Normal”.

Day-in-the-life photo essay- tell the story of a day in the life of a particular subject. Example you can showcase
your routine before the online class, your struggle, motivation, hardwork and responsibilities as a teacher in the
new normal education. A day-in-the-life photo series can be emotionally evocative, giving viewers an intimate
glimpse into the world of another human being.

4. Entries can be created in any software, colored or black & white.

5. Submit your entries to any English teachers until November 22, 2021.

CRITERIA:

Overall Design 30% (The story emotion or event is clear, compelling and powerful)
Invention 50% (Each picture clearly speaks to the topic)

Creativity/presentation 20% (The product is well organized and artistically done)

ALL JHS AND SHS: POSTER MAKING


DESCRIPTION:  Poster Making is an activity that engages the community's interest in an issue, reveal community issues,
and raise awareness of an issue in a way that is visual, inclusive and fun.

OBJECTIVES:

- To develop one's innate creativity and aesthetic adeptness through Poster Making.

MECHANICS:

1. Each participant should submit ONE entry only.

2. The poster must illustrate, interpret and emphasize the theme.

3. The poster must be done in free hand using the following materials (to be provided by contestant): Coupon bond long

and any coloring materials

4. The theme for the poster making shall be: “31st Library and Information Services (LIS) Month theme: Libraries
Building Roads: Readers. Opportunities. Advocacies. Development. Sustainability”

5. Submit your entries to your English teachers until November 22, 2021.
