QUESTION: Which one would be most effective in treating psychological problems?
Clinical psychology or counselling psychology? Discuss with one example.
Clinical psychology
Definition:

Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with understanding,

evaluating, alleviating and preventing mental, emotional and behavioral problems. These
includes a depression, anxiety, abuse and aggressive behavior.

Example: Our clinical psychologists and psychotherapists work with people to improve their
emotional, psychological, and physical health.e.g if someone is suffering from depression then
therapist understand the problem and helped him to reduce his anxiety and get his life back to
track.

Counselling psychology
Definition:

Counselling is face to face communication by which you help the person to make
decisions or solve a problem and act on them. Counselling psychologist deal with normal
problem such as stress.

Example: A counselling psychologist help clients may have difficulty making decisions about
their careers or they may find it hard to make friends.

Which one is more effective for treating the psychological disorder?

Clinical psychology is more effective for treating the psychological disorder as compared to
counselling psychology because counselling psychologist deals with minor problems. They are
normal people who are experiencing daily life issues like in marriage, career choice, studies,
work, and relation etc. Clinical psychologist deal with those patient who have clinical disorder.

For example:

If you have schizophrenia patient, schizophrenia is a real mental illness and its
symptoms include hallucinations and delusions. Patient hear voices perceived to be coming from
the outside. As a clinical psychologist you will work to get this patient cures and you will also
diagnose him with the help of therapy or test and create a treatment plan. Counselling
psychologist can’t deal with schizophrenia patient or also other patients. So that’s why clinical
psychology is more effective for treating the psychological disorder then counselling
psychology.
