The quality inspector at a company needs to make sure that the machine used for milling a component is
working properly. Every hour the inspector takes a random sample of ten components from the output
and measures the length (in centimeter) of each component. The following table shows the statistics on
16 such samples.

1. Compute the average of sample means (x) and average of sample ranges (R) for mean and range
charts, respectively. Determine the upper and lower control limits (corresponding to three standard
deviations) for mean and range charts.

2. Plot both the mean and range charts. What conclusion can you draw about the process, and what
suggestion can you make?

A new restaurant receives a number of complaints each week about the food:

A chocolate factory makes a type of chocolate bar with the speci…cations for its weight between 195
grams to 205 grams. The machine that …lls the bar molds has an average of 198.5 grams per bar and a
standard deviation of 0.9 gram. Is the process capable of meeting the speci…cation?
