SYLLABUS:

Manual drawing

Introduction to engineering drawing and graphics, construction of plane curves, projection of


points, lines and planes, projection of solids, sections of solids and development of surfaces.

Computer Aided Drawing

Systems of projections, principles, conventions and applications of orthographic and isometric


projections, dimensioning principles and conventional representations.

Students are requested to possess at least one book. The following references are only a
recommendation.

Important Note:

The students are required to come to the drawing classes with all the instruments listed below, the
assignment booklet and sketch book. Students must practice the assignment problems before coming
to the manual drawing class so that they can complete the problems within the stipulated time. No extra
time will be given. Completed assignment sheets should be submitted at the end of the manual drawing
class to the person in charge. Marks for the assignments will be awarded only for the problems that
were completed in the manual drawing class. All the exercises should be preserved till the end of the
semester and should be produced whenever required.

ASSIGNMENTS FOR MANUAL CLASSES

Assignment 1 (Lettering, Free hand sketch, Line type and Title block)

1.1 Reproduce Fig. 1.1 (Lettering Practice). Refer the procedure for lettering given in Fig. 1.3

1.2 Sketch the lines shown in Fig. 1.2 with free hand (Free hand sketching practice)

1.3 Construct the following lines and mention the scale.


a) 200 mm to full scale b) 450 mm to half scale c) 25 mm to 5 : 1 scale

1.4 Reproduce Table 1.1 on your drawing sheet.

1.5 Draw title block on lower right corner of the drawing sheet. Refer page no.12.

Assignment 2 (Projections of points and lines)

2.1 Draw the projections of the following points:


i) A: 30 mm in front of VP and 20 mm above HP
ii) B: 25 mm behind VP and 15 mm above HP
iii) C: 30 mm behind VP and 30 mm below HP
iv) D: 40 mm in front of VP and 25 mm below HP

2.2 A line EF is 45 mm long. Draw its projections when it is above HP, in front of VP and
a) Parallel to VP and inclined at 40° to HP.
b) Parallel to HP and inclined at 60° to VP.
c) Perpendicular to HP.
d) Perpendicular to VP.
e) Parallel to Profile Plane (PP) and inclined to both HP (θ= 50°) and VP.

2.3 A straight line AB has its end A 15 mm above HP and 25 mm in front of VP. The other end
B is 65 mm above HP and 55 mm in front of VP. If the end projectors are 55 mm apart, draw
the projections of the line. Determine its true length and true inclinations with HP and VP.

2.4 Front view of line AB is 50° inclined to X-Y line and measures 55 mm long while its top view
is 60° inclined to X-Y line. If end A is 10 mm above HP and 15 mm in front of VP, draw its
projections, find true length and inclinations of line with HP & VP.

2.5 The end P of a straight line PQ is 20 mm above HP and 30 mm in front of VP. The end Q is 15
mm below HP and 45 mm behind VP. If the end projectors are 50 mm apart, draw the projections
of PQ and determine the true length and its inclinations with reference line.

Assignment 3 (Projections of lines with traces)

3.1 One end of a line AB 75 mm long is 10mm above HP and 25mm in front of VP. The line is
inclined at 25º to the HP and 45º to the VP. Draw the projections and find its traces.

3.2 A line PQ 100 mm long is inclined at 30º to the HP. and at 45º to the VP. Its mid-point is in
the VP and 20 mm above the HP. Draw its projections, if its end P is in the third quadrant and
Q is in the first quadrant.

3.3 The ends of a line MN are on the same projector. The end is 20 mm below HP and 12 mm
behind VP. The end Q is 55 mm above HP and 45 mm in front of VP. Determine its true
length and traces and its inclinations with reference planes.

3.4 The front view of a line AB measures 65 mm and makes an angle of 45º with X-Y line. A is
in the HP & the VT of the line is 15 mm below the HP. The line is inclined at 30º to the VP.
Draw the projections of the line & find its true length & its inclinations with the HP & also
locate its HT.

3.5 A line AB is 75 mm long. Its FV and TV make 45º and 60º inclinations with X-Y line
respectively. End A is 15mm above HP and VT is 20mm below X-Y line. Line is in the first
quadrant. Draw projections and find inclinations with HP and VP. Also locate HT.

3.6 The top view of line AB is 75 mm long and inclined to 45° to XY line. The length of the front
view is 65 mm long. The end A is 20 mm above HP and 10 mm in front of VP. Draw the
projections. Find its true length and inclinations with reference planes. Also locate horizontal
and vertical traces.

3.7 The end of the line AB is in the first quadrant, 20 mm above HP and 30 mm in front of VP. The
other end is 40 mm behind VP and 50 mm below HP. The distance between the projectors of the
line is 60 mm. Draw the projections of the line find its true length, inclinations with reference
planes and traces.

3.8 The end projectors of a line EF are 50 mm apart. The distance between HT and VT is 90 mm.
The HT is 40 mm in front of VP and the VT is 80 mm above HP. Draw the projections of EF,
if its end E is 10 mm above HP. Determine its true length and inclinations.

3.9 Draw the projections of a straight line ST of 100 mm line long when one of its ends is touching
HP. The angle inclination with HP and VP are 40° and 50° respectively. Find its traces.

3.10 A straight line of AB whose front view measures 60 mm and makes an angle of 45° with XY line.
The end A is in HP. The vertical trace of a line is 10 mm below XY. The top view is inclined 30°
to XY. Draw the projections, locate its traces. Mark the distance of end A from the VP.

Assignment 4 (Projections of planes)

4.1 A square lamina ABCD of 30 mm side rests on its corner ‘A’ in HP. The diagonal AC is
inclined at 30o with HP. The diagonal BD is inclined at 45o to VP and parallel to HP. Draw
its projections.

4.2 A semi-circular plane of 80 mm diameter has its straight edge on VP and inclined at 30o to
HP, while the surface of the plane is inclined at 45o to VP. Draw the projections of the plane.

4.3 An isosceles triangular plane of 50 mm base and 75 mm height appears as an equilateral


triangle of 50 mm in the top view. Draw the projections of the plane if its 50 mm long edge
is on HP and inclined at 45o to VP.

4.4 A regular hexagonal lamina of 30 mm side is inclined at 60o to HP and 30o to VP. One of its
edges is on HP and parallel to VP. Draw the projections of the hexagonal lamina.

4.5 A 45o set square, having longest side as 60 mm, is freely suspended from the mid-point of one
of the shorter sides. The plane of the set square makes 60o with VP. Draw the two views of
the set square.

4.6 A circular lamina of diameter 50 mm has a point on the circumference on VP. The lamina
makes 45o with VP. Draw its projections if
i) The front view of the diameter through the point on VP makes 30o with HP.
ii)The diameter through the point on VP makes 30o with HP.

4.7 A hexagonal plane of side 30 mm rests on HP on one of its sides inclined at 45 o to VP. The
surface of the plane makes an angle of 30o with HP. Draw its projections.

4.8 A pentagonal lamina of 30 mm side is resting on HP on one of its sides, while the opposite
corner touches VP. Draw the projections of the lamina, when it makes an angle of 50o with
HP.

4.9 A triangular plane has sides 80 mm, 70 mm and 60 mm. Its top view is a right angled triangle
with one side as 80 mm making an angle of 60o with XY. Draw the projections of the plane.

Assignment 5 (Projections of solids)

5.1 A Pentagonal prism of base side 30 mm and height 70 mm rests with one of its rectangular
faces on HP. If the axis is inclined at 30º to VP. Draw its projections

5.2 A right circular cylinder , having 50 mm base diameter and a 90 mm long axis , is resting on
a point on its circumference of base in HP (or ground). Draw its projections , when the axis
is parallel to VP and inclined at 45º to HP.

5.3 A triangular pyramid of base side 40 mm and axis 70 mm long is freely suspended from one
of the corners of its base. Draw its projections , if the axis is parallel to VP.

5.4 A cone of base diameter 30 mm and 60 mm height , has one of its generators on HP. If the
axis of the cone is seen as 45º inclined to xy line in the top view and the apex is nearer to VP,
draw the projections of the cone.

5.5 A square pyramid having base 25 mm side and 50 mm axis , is resting on one of its base on
the HP. Draw the projections when

1. A side of the base is inclined at 450 to VP and


2. The base is tilted about a corner at an angle of 250

5.6 A pentagonal pyramid having a base with 30 mm side and 60 mm long has a triangular face
in the VP and the axis parallel to the HP. Draw the projections.

5.7 A hexagonal prism having a base with 30 mm side and 40 mm long axis has a centrally drilled
circular hole of 30 mm diameter. Draw its projections when it is resting on an edge of its base
on the HP and its axis is inclined at 600 to the HP and parallel to the VP.

5.8 A hexagonal prism having base side with 25 mm edge and 60 mm long, has an edge of its
base in the VP and is inclined at 600 to the HP. Draw its projections, when the edge of the
other base farthest away from the VP is at a distance of 70 mm from the VP.

Assignment 6 (Sections of solids)

6.1 A cone of base diameter 40 mm and height 60 mm rests on its base on the HP. It is cut by a
plane perpendicular to the VP and parallel to one of the extreme generators , 10 mm away
from it. Draw the sectional top view and the true shape of the section. Name the curve of true
shape section.

6.2 A tetrahedron of edge 70 mm rests on the HP on one of its faces such that one of edges of the
resting face is perpendicular to the VP. It is cut by a plane perpendicular to the VP and inclined
to the HP in such a way that the true shape of the section is an isosceles triangle of base 40mm
and altitude 30mm. Find the inclination of the cutting plane with the HP. Also draw the front
view , sectional top view and the true shape of the section.

6.3 A hollow square prism of outer base side is 50 mm , inner base side is 30 mm and axis length
70 mm is resting on the HP on one of if its ends with a vertical face making 45º with the VP.
It is cut by a plane perpendicular to the VP and inclined at 30º to the HP. The cutting plane
meets the axis at 17 mm from the top. Draw the front view , sectional top view and true shape
of the section.

6.4 A hexagonal pyramid , base 30 mm side and axis 70 mm long, is lying on one of its triangular
faces on the ground with the axis parallel to VP. A vertical section plane, passes through the
top most point of the pyramid in the given position, makes an angle of 30º with the reference
line and cuts the pyramid removing a portion of the base. Draw the top view , sectional front
view and true shape of the section.

6.5 A cube of edge 50 mm is cut such that the true shape of the section is regular hexagon . Draw
its projections and true shape of the section. Also determine the inclination of the cutting
plane.

6.6 A square pyramid of base side 40 mm and height 70 mm rests with its base on HP. One of
the edges of the base is inclined at 30o with XY line.

2. Draw an auxiliary top view on a reference line making 45o with XY line
3. Draw an auxiliary front view on a reference line making 30o with XY line

6.7 An isosceles triangle of base 50 mm and height 70 mm is the elevation of a wedge , cut from
a cylinder of diameter 50 mm. Project an auxiliary plan of the wedge on a new ground line
X1, Y1 inclined at 45o to XY.

Assignment 7 (Development of surfaces)

7.1 A cylinder of 50 mm diameter and axis 65 mm long, is resting on its base with its axis
perpendicular to HP. It is cut by a plane perpendicular to VP and inclined at 45 o to HP and
passing through a point on the axis 25 mm from the top. Draw the development of the lateral
surface of the lower portion of the truncated cylinder.

7.2 A hexagonal prism of base side 20 mm and height 50 mm is resting on its base on HP with
two of its lateral faces parallel to VP. It is cut by a plane perpendicular to VP and inclined 30o
to HP. The cutting plane meets the axis at a distance of 30 mm above the base. Draw the
development of the lateral surfaces of the lower portion of the truncated prism.

7.3 A hexagonal pyramid with 25 mm base side and 60 mm height, which is resting on its base
on HP such that an edge of the base is perpendicular to VP. It is cut by a plane perpendicular
to VP, making an angle of 60o to HP and bisecting the axis. Draw the development of the
lateral surfaces of the truncated pyramid.

7.4 A cone of base diameter 40 mm and height 55 mm rests on its base on HP. A square hole
of diagonal 18 mm is drilled through the cone with one of the diagonal coinciding with the
axis of the cone. The axis of the hole drilled is perpendicular to VP and meets the axis of the
cone 20 mm above the base of the cone. Draw the development of the surface of the cut cone.

7.5 A pentagonal prism of base side 30 mm and height 60 mm, is resting on its base on HP
having one of its base edges perpendicular to VP. A section plane inclined at 60 o to HP
and perpendicular to VP cuts its axis at a distance of 35 mm from the base. Draw the
development of the lateral surfaces of the truncated prism.

7.6 A square pyramid of base side 30 mm and axis 40 mm is resting on its base on HP with
sides of base equally inclined to VP. A hole of diameter 18 mm is drilled through the
pyramid such that the axis of the hole is perpendicular to VP, parallel to HP and
intersecting the axis of the pyramid at 12 mm above the base. Draw the development of
lateral surfaces of the truncated pyramid.

7.7 A cone of base diameter 60 mm and height 70 mm is resting on its base on the ground. It is cut
by a plane perpendicular to VP and parallel to HP at a distance of 20 mm from the vertex. It
is also cut by a plane inclined 45o to the base and meeting the axis at a point 20 mm above the
base. Draw the development of the lateral surface of the cut cone.

Assignment 9 (Conic sections)

9.1 Construct an ellipse when the distance between the focus and the directrix is 90mm and the
eccentricity is 2/3.Draw the tangent and normal at any point P on the curve 75 mm away
from the directrix.

9.2 Construct a Parabola within a Parallelogram of sides 110mm x 50 mm, the included angle
between the sides is 70⁰ by parallelogram method.

9.3 A stone is thrown from a 8m high building and at its highest flight the stone just crosses a
16m high palm tree. Trace the path of the stone, till it touches the ground. The distance
between the building and palm tree is 6m. Take suitable scale.

9.4 Construct a rectangular hyperbola when a point P on it is at a distance of 50mm and


40mm respectively from the two asymptotes.

9.5 Construct an ellipse when a pair of conjugate diameters AB and CD are equal to 140 mm and
110 mm respectively. The angle between the conjugate diameters is 50⁰ by Circle method

9.6 Draw an ellipse when its major axis is 100 mm and minor axis is 60 mm by Concentric
circles method

9.7 Draw a parabola when its double ordinate is 180mm and abscissa is 80mm. Find the focus
and directrix. Draw a pair of tangents from a point P outside the curve. Point P is 40mm from
the focus and 20mm from the vertex.

9.8 Draw a hyperbola when its double ordinate is 120mm, abscissa is 50mm and half the
transverse axis is 70 mm.
