SJAD PRAYER
God, our loving Father you gave us Saint Joseph as the patron of our school and our personal
friend. He was a good citizen of our land and devoted father and husband. May he be our father
and protector and our guide in following the will of God. Like him, may we hear your voice in
times of trouble and confusion. Obtain for us through Saint Joseph a sincere and pure heart, a
fervent love for prayer in goodness and the grace to do all our actions for your kingdom and your
greater glory.
I dedicate myself to follow his examples of righteousness and loyalty to Mary and Jesus.
Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Observe the materials in the pictures.
How are they different from each other?
Changes in
the Properties
of Matter
Heat is an important form of energy that affects the changes
in the temperature of materials. It can raise the temperature to
make an object hot or it can lower the temperature to make the
object cold.

Temperature is a measure of the hotness or coldness of

an object.
The changes in temperature can affect the properties of
matter. Of these properties, the state of matter is the most
commonly affected by the changes in temperature.
You have learned the following changes in the properties of matter:
solid changing into liquid by melting;
liquid changing into solid by freezing;
liquid changing into gas by vaporization;
solid changing into gas state by sublimation.
These changes happen to materials when they are exposed to
different temperatures
The ice cream undergoes physical change as it melts. It changes state
from solid to liquid. In this type of change, the composition of the ice cream
remains the same which means there are no new materials formed.
The syrup is the product of chemical change as the ingredients combine
together when heated at high temperature. In a chemical change, a new
material is formed. Materials that undergo chemical change may change in
color, taste, or smell. They also cannot be change back to their original form.

You can tell the exact temperature of how hot the syrup and how
cold is the ice cream with the use of thermometer.
It is a device used to measure temperature.
Temperature Affects
the
Thermal Properties
Why are telephone and electric wires not fully stretched
when they are installed?
This is done to prevent overstretching and breaking in case the wire expands during hot
weather.

Why are there gaps between segments of cemented roads?

Such gaps or joints where provided to prevent breaking if the cemented road expands during hot weather.
Higher temperature causes the molecules of a substance to vibrate rapidly which makes the substance
expand. The increase in the volume of the substance due to heat is called thermal expansion.

Materials that are made of metals expand when heated. They can increase their length, width,

and height, while their mass and weight remain the same. On the contrary, metals contract when cooled.
Most liquids and gases expand when heated. Heated air becomes very light as its
molecules vibrate faster and occupy more space. This explains why a hot air balloon
flies into the air. Liquids that expand when heated increase their volume while their
mass remains the same.
