III. Read the passage below and choose the best answer from A, B, C, or D. (10 points)
It's often said that we learn things at the wrong time. University students frequently do the
minimum of work because they're crazy about a good social life instead. Children often scream
before their piano practice because it’s so boring. They have to be given gold stars and medals
to be persuaded to swim, or have to be bribed to take exams. But the story is different when
you’re older.
Over the years, I've done my share of adult learning. At 30, I went to a college and did
courses in History and English. It was an amazing experience. For starters, I was paying, so
there was no reason to be late - I was the one frowning and drumming my fingers if the tutor
was late, not the other way round. Indeed, if I could persuade him to linger for an extra five
minutes, it was a bonus, not a nuisance. I wasn't frightened to ask questions, and homework
was a pleasure not a pain. When I passed an exam, I had passed it for me and me alone, not for
my parents or my teachers. The satisfaction I got was entirely personal.
Some people fear going back to school because they worry that their brains have got rusty.
But the joy is that, although some parts have rusted up, your brain has learnt all kinds of other
things since you were young. It has learnt to think independently and flexibly and is much

4
better at relating one thing to another. What you lose in the rusty department, you gain in the
maturity department.
In some ways, age is a positive plus. For instance, when you're older, you get less
frustrated. Experience has told you that, if you're calm and simply do something carefully
again and again, eventually you'll get the hang of it. The confidence you have in other areas -
from being able to drive a car, perhaps - means that if you can’t, say, build a chair instantly,
you don't, like a child, want to destroy your first pathetic attempts. Maturity tells you that you
will, with application, eventually get there. I hated piano lessons at school, but I was good at
music. And coming back to it, with a teacher who could explain why certain exercises were
useful and with musical concepts that, at the age of ten, I could never grasp, was magical.
Initially, I did feel a bit strange, thumping out a piece that I'd played for my school exams, with
just as little comprehension of what the composer intended as I'd had all those years before.
But soon, complex emotions that I never knew poured out from my fingers, and suddenly I
could understand why practice makes perfect.

An important part of world history is the story of communication. In prehistoric times, for
example, people did not have books. They did not know much about geography. People were
limited. They knew only about themselves and their environment (the land around their
homes). Their knowledge of geographical things like mountains and rivers was limited. They
did not travel very far. Sometimes they knew about nearby people and communicated with
them. They sent messages in simple ways. Early signals for communication included smoke
from fires and the sounds of drums. Then people formed towns, and then cities, as safe places
to live. Soon they began to develop other ways to communicate, to spread information. People
began to buy and sell things to one another. Because of their business, they developed writing
systems to keep records and to send messages. Life was changing for many people. Business
caused changes, and so did the invention of the printing press. Many more people learned to
read then. Suddenly communication and knowledge improved greatly. People sent letters and
news by horse and carriage. Later the mail went by train and then by airplane. World
communication was now a possibility.

Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most foods only in
season. Drying, smoking and salting could preserve meat for a short time, but the availability
of fresh meat, like that of fresh milk, was very limited; there was no way to prevent spoilage.
However, in 1810, a French inventor named Nicolas Alpert developed the cooking-and-sealing
process of canning. And in the 1850’s an American named Gail Borden developed a means of
condensing and preserving milk. Canned goods and condensed milk became more common
during the 1860’s, but supplies remained low because cans had to be made by hand. By 1880,
however, inventors had fashioned stamping and soldering machines that mass-produced cans
from tinplate. Suddenly all kinds of food could be preserved and bought at all times of the
year.
Other trends and inventions had also helped make it possible for Americans to vary their
daily diets. Growing urban population created demand that encouraged fruit and vegetable
farmers to raise more produce. Railroad refrigerator cars enabled growers and meat packers to
ship perishables great distances and to preserve them for longer periods. Thus, by the 1890’s,
northern city dwellers could enjoy southern and western strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes,
previously available for a month at most, for up to six months of the year. In addition,
increased use of iceboxes enabled families to store perishables. As easy means of producing
ice commercially had been invented in the 1870’s, and by 1900 the nation had more than two
thousand commercial ice plants, most of which made home deliveries. The icebox became a
fixture in most homes and remained so until the mechanized refrigerator replaced it in the
1920’s and 1930’s.
Almost everyone now had a more diversified diet. Some people continued to eat mainly
foods that were heavily in starches or carbohydrates, and not everyone could afford meat.
Nevertheless, many families could take advantage of previously unavailable fruits, vegetables,

The Seashore Ecosystem
The seashore or coastline is the unique area where seawater borders land to create a
diverse and very important ecosystem. It is special in that the freshwater carried along by
rivers and streams flows into the ocean and mixes with salt water to provide rich nutrients and
food to a variety of marine plants and animals. The wildlife along the coast is part of a never-
ending food chain as each tiny insect depends on its nourishment on other even smaller
creatures; therefore, any human interference in the life cycle of the seashore will cause
irreparable damage to the environment in the long run.
To better understand how people can destroy seashores without any chance of recovery
one needs to take a better look at how this area is formed. Seashores are ever-changing
environments that depend on the constant movement of tidal waves. According to the
placement of the moon in relation to the sun, the waves that pound and beat the shore can
either come up to the land or move away from it. This movement is called a tide, and when the
sea rises and drowns the land, there is high tide, while the reverse is a low tide. The area of the
seashore that is submerged during high tides and above water at low tides is called the inter-
tidal zone. Subtidal zones are always under water.
Both these areas, as well as the upper shores support an abundance of marine wildlife.
Many types of seaweed cling to rocks by using their ‘holdfast’ at the base of the stem, while
others live in deep water and are often washed ashore by high tides. Several crabs and prawns
feed on seaweed, while humans also use this plant as food, fertilizer or medicine. Sea otters
often wrap their bodies with seaweed before dozing off so as not to accidentally move into the
ocean while sleeping.
12
Other fascinating creatures are sea anemones, sponges and corals, which may look like
delicate and colorful flowers, but are actually animals. Anemones catch and eat other animals
with their parts like flowers, while corals are indeed hardened colonies of marine creatures,
which offer rich feeding grounds for fish and also regulate the water’s carbon dioxide content.
Seashores are popular areas for people to come and collect shells, which used to provide
protection for soft-bodied creatures called mollusks. Mollusks can move at a snail’s pace only.
This slow movement is due to the fact that they have only one muscular footlike body part to
help them move along. Commonly eaten mollusks are clams, oysters and scallops, as well as
squid and octopuses, which come without hard shells. Besides mollusks, people also gather sea
urchins, which look like balls covered with many long and sharp needles. The small sea
urchins use their needles to scrape and dig holes inside rocks, where they lay their eggs. These
eggs are a very sought-after restaurant delicacy.
76. Seashores are unique areas because the combination of freshwater and salt water
supports the existence of diverse wildlife.
77. Inter-tidal zone is an area that is under water only when the tide is high.
78. If there was no seaweed on the seashore, otters would lack vital support while taking a
rest.
79. Anemones and corals are plants.
80. Both mollusks and sea urchins have a similar body structure.

popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great
success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became common for group and
singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit record
was in 1963 and they split in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it
had become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and

A meter is a measuring device. Just as the speedometer in an automobile tells how fast the car
is going, a thermometer records how warm or how cold something is.

Thermometers measure heat in degrees. For example, for comfort indoors the temperature in a
room should be about 70o Faraheit. A simple room thermometer can tell us how near to this the
temperature in a room is. Other kinds of thermometers are also used. One is used to measure
the heat of an oven. It shows heat from 100 o to 600o. Another may be used on an air-
conditioner. The thermometers used to measure body heat record temperatures from 92 o to
108o. Other thermometers can be used to show that water freezes at 32 o. The thermometer used
to tell temperature outdoors often records from far below 0o to about 120o.

A thermometer is a much-used measuring device that proves helpful in the home, the office,
the factory, the laboratory, the schoolroom, and many other places.

Part III. (10pts) Read the passage below and choose the best answer from A, B, C, or D.
The Winterthur Museum is a collection and a house. There are many museums
devoted to the decorative arts and many house museums, but rarely in the United States is a
great collection displayed in a great country house. Passing through successive generations of a
single family, Winterthur has been a private estate for more than a century. Even after the
extensive renovations made to it between 1929 and 1931, the house remained a family
residence. This fact is of importance to the atmosphere and effect of the museum. The
impression of a lived-in house is apparent to the visitor; the rooms look as if they were vacated
only a short while ago ― whether by the original owners of the furniture of the most recent
25
residents of the house can be a matter of personal interpretation. Winterthur remains, then, a
house in which a collection of  furniture and architectural elements has been assembled. Like
an English country house, it is an organic structure; the house, as well as the collection and
manner of displaying it to the visitor, has changed over the years. The changes have
coincided with developing concepts of the American arts, increased knowledge on the part of
collectors and students, and a progression toward the achievement of a historical effect in
period-room displays. The rooms at Winterthur have followed this current, yet still retained the
character of a private house.
The concept of a period room as a display technique has developed gradually over the
years in an effort to present works of art in a context that would show them to grater effect and
would give them more meaning for the viewer. Comparable to the habitat group in a natural
history museum, the period room represents the decorative arts in a lively and interesting
manner and provides an opportunity to assemble objects related by style, date, or place of
manufacture.

Part IV. (5pts) Read the passage and check T/ F for each statement below.
Verbal and nonverbal messages within the same interaction can sometimes send opposing
or conflicting messages: A person verbally expressing a statement of truth while avoiding eye
contact may convey a mixed message to the receiver in the interaction. Conflicting messages
may occur for a variety of reasons often stemming from feelings of uncertainty, ambivalence,
or frustration. When mixed messages occur, nonverbal communication becomes the primary
tool people use to attain additional information to clarify the situation; great attention is placed
on bodily movements and positioning when people perceive mixed messages during
interactions. Accurate interpretation of messages is made easier when nonverbal and verbal
communication complement each other. Nonverbal cues can be used to elaborate on verbal
messages to reinforce the information sent when trying to achieve communicative goals;
messages have been shown to be remembered better when nonverbal signals affirm the verbal
exchange. Nonverbal behavior is sometimes used as the sole channel for communication of a
message. People learn to identify facial expressions, body movements, and body positioning as
corresponding with specific feelings and intentions. Nonverbal signals can be used without
verbal communication to convey messages; when nonverbal behavior does not effectively
communicate a message, verbal methods are used to enhance understanding. Nonverbal
behavior also regulates our conversations. Touch, voice pitch, and gestures are some of the
tools people use to accent or amplify the message that is sent. Nonverbal behavior can also he
used to moderate or tone down aspects of verbal messages as well. For example, a person who
is verbally expressing anger may stress the verbal message by shaking a fist.
76.That verbal and nonverbal messages interact in a conversation may sometimes send
opposing or conflicting messages.
77. That we are talking to someone but do not have eye contact with him/her may lead to a
mixed message?
78. When mixed messages occurred, words are mainly used to clarify the meaning.
79. Nonverbal communication is always effective.
