TITLE : HEAT TREATMENT

OBJECTIVE : To learn and conduct the methods of steel heat treatment process (Metals/ Alloys).

THEORY :
Heat treatment is a method used to alter the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of a
material by subjecting the material to various temperatures. Heat treatment is widely used in engineering
industry because it can alter the size, shape and composition of a material. When steel is subjecting to
723C, austenite will be formed. Austenite is transformed from Pearlite. Austenite will transform into ferrite
and cementite during the cooling process. Soft and ductile structure will be formed in slow cooling.
However, rapid cooling will result in a hard but brittle structure.

APPARATUS : Electric furnace and specimen (mild/low carbon steel).

PROCEDURES :

A. Specimen Preparation:

Prepare five (5) specimens with dimension of 20mm x 50mm (diameter x length).
Mark the specimens and then start the heat treatment respectively to their procedures.
Once the heat treatment is done, clean the specimens.

B. Experiment procedure (Please refer the video given)

S0 – Raw Specimen (without any heat treating)

S1 – Full Annealing
Carbon steel (0.83% C) is heated to 25-50C above the upper critical temperature (Line A3).
Carbon steel (0.83%C) is heated to 50C above the lower critical temperature (Line Acm).
Furnace cooled is applied.

S2 – Normalizing
The heating procedure is similar to full annealing process, but the carbon steel is air-cooled.

S3 – Quenching
Carbon steel is heated to 10C above the upper critical point (refer to %carbon content), followed
by rapid cooling in water or oil.

S4 – Tempering
The quenched carbon steel is heated again to a temperature which is below the lower critical
point (723C).
RESULT:

Draw the specimen microstructure after subjected to the heat treatment accordingly.
