Health hazard Moderate toxicity – slightly corrosive. This product has the potential to cause
adverse health effects with over exposure. Use safe work practices to avoid
eye or skin contact and inhalation. Chronic exposure may result in severe
irritation. Over exposure may result in nasal and respiratory disease. Nickel
compounds are classified as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).
However, due to the product form (i.e. dampened solid) the risk of exposure is
greatly reduced.
Eye slightly corrosive – irritant. Contact may result in irritation, lacrimation pain,
redness, conjunctivitis and possible burns.
Inhalation irritant – toxic. Over exposure to dust may result in mucous membrane irritation
and sensitisation. High level exposure may result in toxic systemic effects.
Nickel salts have been shown to cause an increased incidence of asthma and
bronchitis, decreased pulmonary function and increased incidence of lung and
nasal cancers. IARC have concluded that strong inorganic acid mists
containing sulphuric acid are carcinogenic to humans, causing cancer of the
larynx and lung (IARC Group 1).
Skin slightly corrosive. Contact may result in irritation, redness, pain, rash, and
dermatitis. May cause sensitisation by skin contact.
Ingestion moderate toxicity – slightly corrosive. Ingestion may result in gastrointestinal
irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and ulceration. Nickel is poorly
absorbed through the stomach.

12.6 Other adverse effects

AQUATIC : Mobility of nickel is controlled by various sorbents which scavenge it from solution. In
pristine environments, hydrous oxides of iron & manganese control its mobility via sorption & co -
precipitation. In polluted environments, the most abundant organic material will keep nickel soluble.
Nickel is one of the most mobile heavy metals in aquatic environments and can persist indefinitely
in natural waters.

SECTION 13: DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

13.1 Waste treatment methods
Waste disposal Solutions : Cover with sodium carbonate (soda ash), lime or similar alkali to
ensure pH greater than 8.5. Collect precipitated solids in sealable containers
and label accordingly. Solids : Dampen if necessary and avoid dust generation.
Collect solids and store in sealable labelled containers. Absorb with soil and
contact the manufacturer for disposal instructions.
Legislations Dispose of in accordance with relevant local legislation.

SECTION 16: OTHER INFORMATION

Additional ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANT : This compound is reported to be
information toxic to aquatic organisms and some citrus plants in low concentrations. All
care must be taken to ensure contamination of waterways is eliminated.

NICKEL : Reported and potential adverse health effects associated with

occupational exposure to Nickel metal and inorganic compounds include ; an
increased risk of nasal, lung and possibly laryngeal cancer in nickel refinery
workers; increased risk of gastric cancer; increased risk of sarcoma (cancer
arising from connective tissue); severe irritation of the upper respiratory tract;
pulmonary irritation and fibrosis; pneumoconiosis; bronchial asthma; increased
susceptibility to respiratory infections ; and dermatitis.

RESPIRATORS : in general the use of respirators should be limited and

engineering controls employed to avoid exposure. If respiratory equipment
must be worn ensure correct respirator selection and training is undertaken.
Remember that some respirators may be extremely uncomfortable when used
for long periods. The use of air powered or air supplied respirators should be
considered where prolonged or repeated use is necessary,

HEALTH EFFECTS FROM EXPOSURE :

It should be noted that the effects from exposure to this product will depend on
several factors including : frequency and duration of use; quantity used;
effectiveness of control measures; protective equipment used and method of
application. Given that it is impractical to prepare a report which would
encompass all possible scenarios, it is anticipated that users will assess the
risks and apply control methods where appropriate.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES :

The recommendation for protective equipment contained within this Safety
Data Sheet report is provided as a guide only. Factors such as method of
application, working environment, quantity used, product concentration and the
availability of engineering controls should be considered before final selection
of personal protective equipment is made.

reports so as to clearly identify how users can control the hazards and thereby
reduce the risk (or likelihood) of adverse effects. As a general guideline, a
Green colour rating indicates a low hazard, an Amber colour rating indicates a
moderate hazard and a Red colour rating indicates a high hazard.

While all due care has been taken by PT. HPL in the preparation of the Colour
Rating System, it is intended as a guide only and PT. HPL does not provide
any warranty in relation to the accuracy of the Colour Rating System. As far as
is lawfully possible, PT. HPL accepts no liability or responsibility whatsoever
