SECTION ONE: INTRODUCTION


Unit Description
This unit will help you to understand what business information systems (IS) are and how they relate to business function. Create an understanding of how Information Systems are a key component of business and how it can be used to create value and a competitive advantage. Develop your knowledge of Enterprise Information systems and how they relate to an organisations strategic goals. Develop your knowledge on how to develop information systems that create business value and meet the objectives of the business.

Introduction
Welcome to Information Systems and Technology. Information is essential to survive in the modern business world and Information technology is essential for the best use of information. For an organisation to operate efficiently, it is important that the most appropriate Information technology is implemented and maintained. This unit will provide a broad -based background to information technology and it s core objective of creating business value. It will give insight into who uses computers, how and when they can be used, and the tasks they perform. It will cover how they affect our society and economy, and how to select and use them to best benefit your life or organisation.

Attendance Requirements
Attendance to all lectures and tutorials is a requirement of this course. Lectures are 1 hour followed by 2.5 hour tutorials which involve practical application of the theory. Some course materials, lecture content or slides may be made available on the Learning Management System. Lectures may require pre -reading and tutorial activities may require preparation. Regular attendance at tutorials will develop and practise your skills. Tutorial activities may be assessed.

Assessment Submissions
It is the students responsibility to:

Submit a cover sheet with all written work for continuous assessment which includes a signed declaration of authenticity; Ensure delivery of the assessment work to the secure location provided; and Maintain a copy of all submitted work until at least the expiration of the appeal period.

Lecturers will advise students of other assessment submission requirements. Turnitin software is available for students to check their work and will be utilised by ecturers to check for l plagiarism. All electronic copies must have a file name that clearly identifies the unit name and assessment name. Assessment due dates are displayed on the Unit Timetable.

Extensions for Submission Dates


Any student who wishes to defer the submission of an assignment must apply in writing to the Course Coordinator before the due date for an extension. The Application for Deferred Assessment must clearly set out the grounds on which deferral is sought. An extension is granted at the discretion of the Lecturer and penalties may be applied. Late assignments submitted after the fixed or extended time for submission will be subject to 5% per day penalty. You must submit an Application for Deferred Assessment form with your late work.

Attendance at Examinations
It is the students responsibility to know the date, time and location of the examination(s) and to be at the designated venue on time. Students are permitted to enter the examination room 5 minutes before the start time. Students arriving less than 30 minutes late may sit the examination but will not be given extra time. If you are unable to attend the examination due to sudden illness or accident an Application for Deferred Assessment must be submitted.

Supplementary Assessments/Examinations
Supplementary examinations can only be granted if the level of work is satisfactory AND all compulsory semester assessments have been completed.If students do not pass their final examination they can only be offered a supplementary assessment/exam by the Board of Examiners.

Determination of the Final Grade


To pass this unit you must complete all the assessments. You must pass the unit overall and pass the final exam. A minimum pass mark of 50% must be achieved for the final exam and for the unit overall.

Assessment Appeals
Students who believe they have received an incorrect assessment result or consider they have been marked unfairly should first discuss their assessment concerns with their Lecturer. They may request a re -mark of an assessment. Students may lodge a written appeal against the final grade of a unit within 14 calendar days of the receipt of their Academic Record through their Higher Education Course Coordinator. An Appeals Committee will consider each appeal and make a decision based on the evidence presented by the student and the assessor.

Tutorial Assessments

10% each

Each week in your tutorial you will be given an assessment to commence in class. This could be an assessment that you do as an individual or as a group. There are 13 assessment altogether to be complete. Each assessment is from the review section in your text book or adapted from your text book. You must complete 10 of the 13 assessments. Your ark will be taken form the top 10 assessments you submit. All assessments will be submitted to the Learning Management System (LMS) Assignment instructions and preparation including: o You will have 1 hour each week to commence the assignment in your tutorial class. This is an opportunity to work together, ask questions and discuss your understanding. o It is expect that each of these assignment will be no less than 350 words and should include; pictures, diagrams, charts, illustrations, video or external links. o Clear and concise writing is the objective of these assignments. Marking criteria: Each assessment will be marked on the following o Your understanding of the topic o Your answer to the question o Your use of references and other information used outside of your text book o Your assignment presentation o Your ability to be clear and concise in your answer Guidelines o It is important to understand that because there is no exam in this unit each tutorial assignments is worth 9% of the total marks. This means that you must ensure that you submit at least 12 of the 13 assignments. You must also be in attendance at all tutorial sessions, as some of the assignments require group work.
