Question (1)
The shown figures represent the outline of various Sq.th 22×5 power screw-based mechanisms. The frame
is fastened to the base by no of 8.8 tap bolts of M10×1.25:
• The frame is fastened to the base by 4 bolts in Figures 1 & 2.
• The frame is fastened to the base by 8 bolts in Figures 3 & 4.
The bolts are arranged in rows (2 bolts per row) and the max load per bolt is 35 kN. Calculate the external
load per one bolted joint for the following mechanisms if the axial load F = 10 kN.

Question (2)
The shown bracket is fastened on the wall by 6 tap bolts of M12×1.25 size. The bolts are arranged in 3 rows
(2 bolts per row) and the grade of bolts is 3.6. The bracket is subjected to horizontal force of 10000 N at
point (a).

Note: Esteel = 210 × 103 MPa, μsteel/steel = 0.2 and the joint stiffness is twice bolt stiffness.

Answer the following questions for the bolt which is located in the 3 rd row:
1. Calculate the external tensile load per one bolted joint (F).
2. If the external tensile load per one bolted joint (F) = 3000 N and the max allowed load per bolt = 6000
N, Calculate the tightening torque.
3. Calculate the assembly and working stresses induced in the bolt cross section.
4. Calculate the safety factor during the assembly and working conditions.

Question (3)
The following figure shows the pressure cylinder of inside diameter A = 120 mm. The maximum allowable
pressure inside the cylinder is 6 MPa. The flanges widths are D=15mm and E=25mm. The cylinder cover is
held by 10 through bolts of M14×1.5 size.
a) Calculate the bolt stiffness.
b) Calculate the tightening torque if the joint stiffness is twice the bolt stiffness and the required
residual load in joint = 5000 N.
c) Calculate the assembly and working stresses induced in the bolt cross section.
d) Choose the suitable grade for through bolt. Using safety factor = 2.

Knowing that: 3.6 and 5.6 are the available through bolt grade.

Question (4)
For the bracket shown in the figure, it is fitted to the
swiveling φ 100 mm column of a wall mounted jib crane
with 6 studs at distances 25, 75, and 125 mm from the
bottom end. Assume that the thickness of the base
plate is 15 mm. The studs are M16x1.5 (A=167 mm2).
a) Draw a construction drawing for this bracket
showing the bolts connections.
b) Calculate the joint and stud stiffness.
c) Which stud holds maximum force? Calculate the
external force on this stud.
d) For a minimum residual load of 50% of the
maximum load condition, plot the loading diagram. Estimate the initial tension required.
e) Calculate the needed tightening torque to generate this initial tension.
f) Calculate the assembly and working stresses and hence select the high tensile steel stud
material.
g) If the load varies from the values on the diagram to zero in a cyclic manner. Check the stud
for the dynamic load applied to it. For steel, the value of the endurance stress is 80% of the
yield stress.

Question (5)

For the hand press shown in the adjacent figure, it is designed

to provide a punching force of 30 kN. Draw the joint in
Assembly 2. Show the effective cone. Calculate the needed
initial tension and the tightening torque to secure a residual
holding force of 10 kN after the load is applied. Verify if the
threaded part of the column will fail during operation only. The
material is St 42 and the thread is M20. Cb = 440 kN/mm and
CJ = 1100 kN/mm.

Question (6)
A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their
ends for the purpose of transmitting power. The flange and the hub
of the coupling shown in figure are assembled using welding. This
coupling is required to transmit 10 HP at 500 rpm, and the shaft
diameter is 60 mm. The two flanges are connected using 6xM18
through bolts. The thickness of the flange is 20 mm and the PCD of
the bolt circle is 140 mm.
a) Calculate the external force each bolt has to withstand.
b) Calculate the bolt and joint stiffenesses - the required initial tension - the tightening torque.
Check the assembly and operating stresses. Select the material of the bolts.
c) If fit bolts are used instead of the through bolts, select the material of the bolts.
d) Draw a construction drawing of the encircled parts when the used bolts are fit bolts.

Question (7)

The given sketch shows a layout of a monorail trolley. The safe working load is 15 kN. In your
calculations, consider a test load factor of 1.5 and safety factor of 1.3. You are required to:
a) Calculate the external force on the bolt fixing the wheel axle to the side plate.
b) Draw the loading diagram of the pre-stressed bolt. Calculate the initial tension that should be
generated in the bolt, and the tightening torque. Consider a required residual load of 50% of
the external load. Cb = 440 kN/mm and CJ = 1100 kN/mm.
