Inquiry Question: Why do some people fall so deeply into habitual procrastination?”.
● Is procrastination really considered unethical?

Remember: Use full sentences, and your own words, for ALL parts of this research chart.

SUMMARIZE the important information:

● This early episode of my favourite show, Grey’s Anatomy, shows the simplicity of procrastination in a
habitual manner. It shows how easily we fall into it and the little things that cause us to procrastinate.
● Summary of Show - The medical drama series follows a group of young doctors at Seattle Grace
Mercy West Hospital who started their careers as interns. Meredith Grey, one of the young physicians
and the show's namesake, is the daughter of a distinguished surgeon. Grey struggles to maintain ties
with her coworkers, notably the hospital's former chief of surgery, Richard Webber, owing to a
pre-existing relationship - Webber and Meredith's mother had a personal relationship when Meredith
was young.

● Season 1, Episode 6 Short Summary

○ When a lady arrives with a record-breaking tumour, all of the interns are in amazement, but the
tumor is so advanced that the woman's prognosis is not promising. Meredith and Derek's(love
interest and attending) employment are in risk now that Bailey (surgical resident) is aware of
their romance, and she firmly pushes Meredith to terminate it. Meanwhile, Cristina (intern) and
Burke's (attending) hidden connection becomes more difficult, and when no one else is
available, Izzie (intern) is forced to do a significant treatment on her own.

○ Meredith awakens, shutting off her alarm and gazing out the rain-splattered window. George
tries to unlock her door while carrying two coffee mugs and spills coffee on himself. As he
walks away to change, Izzy pats him on the shoulder. Meredith's alarm goes off once again, and
she switches it off. Izzie and George argue over waiting for Meredith before going to work. Izzie
makes fun of George's feelings for Meredith, which he rejects.
○ In the parking lot, Meredith and Derek (love interest) run into one other. Derek accuses
Meredith of avoiding him, which she acknowledges and claims she is late. Derek thinks things
are becoming complex, but Meredith tells him it's complicated for her, and Bailey (resident)
won't talk to her any longer. Derek believes this isn't always a negative thing. Derek asks if she
wants him to simply walk away from the situation. She replies yes, then no, then confirms she's
running late.
○ Meredith is terrified of getting fired for sleeping with McDreamy. Cristina (fellow intern/friend)
claims that they are unable to fire her formally. Meredith is certain she must quit her
relationship with Derek, but Cristina encourages her to stop talking.
○ Later on, Bailey instructs the interns to maintain decorum as she introduces Annie Connors
■ Overweight patient who is suffering from a massive tumour.
■ Cristina is with Annie's mother, who claims Annie was merely terrified, and that the
bigger she grew, the less she wanted to see a doctor. Annie's mother claims she dialled
911 because it felt like the correct thing to do. Cristina reminds her that calling a year
ago would have been the correct thing to do.
■ George is chatting with Annie and inquires as to why she allowed things to deteriorate to
this point. Annie informs him that every time someone she cared about went to the
hospital, someone she cared about died, causing her to postpone her trips to the hospital.
George reminds her that she isn't the only one who puts things off since he hasn't asked
her roommate out since day one.
○ Alex informs George that Meredith is no longer available. That's impossible, according
to George, since if she was seeing someone, he'd know.
■ Later, he attempts to enter her room with beers to speak with her, but she is not
present. He knows he delayed too long and squandered his opportunity.

to IDENTIFY and EVALUATE the most applicable evidence from the piece:

● Her narration is the main theme throughout the episode since the characters are battling their own
struggles and the time wasted based on their fear to act.
○ “He who hesitates is lost.”
■ This direct statement from the episode is a definition of a person who spends too
much time deliberating about what to do and then loses the chance to act upon it.
■ Throughout this episode, George is trying to show his emotions, yet he realizes it
puts him in a vulnerable place. He worries that expressing his emotions will lead
others to judge you and believe you can’t manage your feelings. As a result, you
cave your sadness, fear, frustration, and other so-called negative emotions.
■ Moreover, the judgement of others might concern you; the desire to avoid pain
often stems from an underlying lack of trust of yourself and others. Most
importantly, if people have manipulated your emotions in the past, you might fear
of trusting people with your feelings, you might also lack faith in your own
ability to handle conflict in a positive and productive way
■ The creator of the show, wrote how is George impulsive, flexible, and a horrible
decision-maker. His lack of self-assurance made him a laughingstock among the
other surgical interns out for blood. Regardless of his personality flaws, George
was universally adored. He had his challenges, but with the right guidance, he
might have been one of the greatest surgeons in his class.
● George is a fellow intern who also lives amongst the other interns; throughout the season he reveals his
deep emotions and love to Meredith Grey, and attempts to tell her, yet regularly chickens out.
○ Izzie: Life is short, George. Do you really want to die before you ever ask her out?
○ George: I do not want to ask her out.
○ Izzie: Do you really want to die a liar?
○ George: I'm not... I'm not dying.

● At the beginning of the episode, the main protagonist; Meredith Grey, narrates the opening lead
discussion whereupon she states, [narrating] "A couple of hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared
with the world the secret of his success. 'Never leave that 'til tomorrow,' he said, 'Which you could do
today.' This is the man who discovered electricity. You’d think more of us would listen to what he had
to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I’d say it had a lot to do with fear. Fear
of failure. Fear of pain. Fear of rejection. Sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, because what
if you’re wrong. What if you make a mistake you can’t undo. Whatever it is we're afraid of, one thing
holds true. That by the time the pain of not doing the thing gets worse than the fear of doing it. It can
feel like we're carrying around a giant tumour. And you thought I was speaking metaphorically."
○ We frequently want clarity before making decisions or taking action. We are afraid of making
errors or doing the wrong thing, and we are unsure of our actions. As a result, we do as little as
possible to prevent mistakes—we postpone until we're certain we can behave "exactly."
○ Meredith is unsure on her relationship with Derek Shephard, and she’s aware of the
consequences that would lead to the hospital finding out. She’s uncertain on how to approach
this situation, and in conclusion causes her to reject it. When Derek acknowledges the situation,
he questions Meredith and she avoids the problem and procrostinates her answer based on fear
and uncertainty.
○ We may postpone and avoid it because we do not believe we are competent to complete work or
make a choice. We believe that if we perform poorly on a task, people will look down on us or
we will irritate them. We want to be valued by others, so we postpone because we don't feel
we're "good enough" to succeed without losing face. However, we are frequently our own
harshest critics, unduly critical of our own performances and questioning our capacity to
complete tasks.

● “Whatever it is we're afraid of, one thing holds true. That, by the time the pain of not doing a thing gets
worse than the fear of doing it, it can feel like we're carrying around a giant tumor.” - Meredith Grey
○ After you've investigated the emotional underpinnings of your chronic procrastination, you may
begin learning new skills to help you modify your approach to getting things done.

REFLECT on how this piece could help you answer some or all aspects of your inquiry question:

● My inquiry question concerns:

○ Chronic procrastination; such as worry, fear of failure, and weariness overcome self-control and
motivation. Furthermore, these concerns frequently result in self-perpetuating procrastination
cycles, which force people to procrastinate indefinitely.

● This fictional piece can aid me in answering most aspects of my inquiry question since I focus on the
habitual and realistic struggles most people face, including those around my age.
○ In the piece, I can emphasize the message and reasons on why the characters where acting upon
fear and rejection.
○ My objective is to understand what leads individuals to procrastinate so deeply, and this episode
presents instances of exhibiting affection as well as the irritating anxieties of what can happen if
you expose your sentiments, and if it affects how you approach and manage situations, projects,
and so on in the future. When you are having difficulty performing tasks, diversions create a
sensation of ease that trains your brain to require even more distractions, regardless of the
challenges they bring. The excitement of avoiding unpleasant thoughts feeds a vicious loop that
drives even more procrastination.

● My questions reflects on the psychological reasoning of people; my goal is to see the majority
reasoning and cause that people face
○ The characters experience many roads that lead to procrastination, everyone has their own fears
and unhelpful thought patterns
○ Meredith faced Past Self vs Future Self
■ This section of the episode helps me answer the questions since it addresses the ease and
regular occurrence of procrastination. Meredith immediately turns off her alarm and
remains in bed, hesitant to get out, demonstrating how simple it is and how we think of
our future self as a different person than who we are in the present, allowing us to trade
feeling better now for feeling more stressed later because we believe it's someone else's
problem.
○ My intent was to depict different reasonings and cause of why people procrastinate so heavily
and easily, and this episode gave me an insight on what causes this, the emotions that come after
and during, and how it can impact your day to day basis if fear overpowers your actions.
○ Moreover, when Meredith compares her struggles and weariness to a brain tumour; justifies if
this issue plays a psychological role in one’s mind
