Frequencyadverbs are used to expresshowoftenanspecificactionis done. This


module presentsthefrequencyadverbsalongwiththeexplanation of how to use
them in sentences.

Adverbs of Frequency
English Grammar Rules

We use someadverbs to describe howfrequentlywe do anactivity.


These are called adverbs of frequency and include:

80% normally / generally I normally go to thegym.

30% occasionally I occasionally eatjunkfood.
10% seldom I seldom readthenewspaper.
5% hardlyever / rarely I hardlyever drink alcohol.
0% never I never swim in the sea.

The Position of theAdverb in a Sentence


Anadverb of frequencygoes before a mainverb (exceptwith To Be).

Subject + adverb + mainverb

I always remember to do myhomework.


He normally gets goodmarks in exams.

Anadverb of frequencygoes after theverb To Be.

Subject + to be + adverb

They are never pleased to see me.


She isn't usually badtempered.

Whenwe use anauxiliaryverb (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc.),
theadverbis placed betweentheauxiliary and themainverb. Thisisalso true for to
be.

Subject + auxiliary + adverb + mainverb

She can sometimes beat me in a race.


I would hardlyever be unkind to someone.

They might never see eachotheragain.

They could occasionally be heardlaughing.

We can also use thefollowingadverbs at thestart of a sentence:


Usually, normally, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally

 Occasionally, I like to eat Thai food.

BUT we cannot use thefollowing at thebeginning of a sentence:


Always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never.

We use hardlyever and never with positive, not negativeverbs:

 She hardlyever comes to myparties.


 They never say 'thankyou'.

We use ever in questions and negativestatements:

 Haveyou ever been to New Zealand?


 I haven't ever been to Switzerland.

Adverbs of Definite Frequency


We can also use thefollowingexpressionswhenwewant to be more
specificaboutthefrequency:

 everyday
 once a month
 twice a year
 four times a day
 everyotherweek
 daily
 monthly
