Introduction:

The key in analyzing results in experimental studies rely with your knowledge on choosing the most
appropriate statistics. Right statistics help us support or refute the research hypothesis. We learned so
far from this module that in determining the test to be used, we must know the number of independent
variables, treatment levels, whether matching was done, and the level of measurement used.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this activity, the student should be able to:

1. Identify the right statistics for each experimental conditions;

2. Differentiate levels of measurement, and

3. Identify research variables

Design Summary 1:
Forty participants were randomly selected to participate in a study which aims to investigate how virtual
reality goggles can be used to record eye movements during reading. The study aims to understand
the response time in which different words are read— transposed compared to the normal condition.

How many independent variables are there? Identify each.

There is one independent variable- virtual reality goggles.

How many treatment conditions are there?

There are two treatment conditions- reading with virtual reality goggles and normal reading condition.

Is the experiment run between- or within-subjects?

Within-subjects

Are the subjects matched?

Yes since it is a within-subjects design.

What is the level of measurement of the dependent variable?

The level of measurement of the dependent variable is ratio.

What is the most appropriate test for this experiment?

The most appropriate test for this experiment is repeated measure t-test.
Design Summary 2:

Forty students were randomly selected and randomly assigned to spend 30 minutes either
reading a funny novel or a dramatic one. After 20 minutes, CES-D scale, a measure use to test symptoms of
depression was completed by the participants. Scores on CES-D scale ranged from 0-60, with high scores
indicating depressive symptoms.

How many independent variables are there? Identify each.

There is one independent variable- reading a novel

How many treatment conditions are there?

There are two treatment conditions- reading a funny novel and reading a dramatic novel.

Is the experiment run between- or within-subjects?

The experiment is between-subjects.

Are the subjects matched?

No, it was stated that the participants were randomly assigned.

What is the level of measurement of the dependent variable?

The level of measurement of the dependent variable is ratio.

What is the most appropriate test for this experiment?

The most appropriate test for this experiment is independent measure t-test.
