Module Number: 1 Topic: Characteristics, strengths, weaknesses,

and kinds of quantitative research

I. INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, we are faced with a lot of problems that require possible and immediate
possible solutions. For instance, if the Enhanced Community Quarantine is being
implemented and you are currently working in Manila and you are living in Bulacan,
you might be thinking of ways on how you are going to your hometown or how you are
going to survive in Manila alone for more than a month. One way to solve these
problems is through “Research”. As a learner, research is necessary in order to
develop critical, creative and problem-solving skills which you will need in order to
come up with a good and justifiable decision. Many students are overwhelmed when
asked to do research. This is probably because of the misconception about research;
thus, this module is designed to help you understand the essence of conducting
research, its characteristics, kinds, strengths, weaknesses.

II. THIS LESSON WAS MADE FOR YOU TO:

1. describe characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative
research.

III. DISCUSSION
A. Presentation of the Lesson

Speech Drill

In speaking, it is not enough to pronounce words correctly, you should

also use proper blending of words to make the sounds good for your audience.
In blending, not all words are pronounced as separate words, they seem to flow
into the next word.

Examples:

1. Look at the method.

2. Tell her about the answers.
3. May I borrow your pen and paper?
4. Give it to him at eight o’clock.
5. How’s your research? It’s do or die situation.

Quantitative Research Method uses numbers in stating answers or

generalizations about a given problem or inquiry in contrast to qualitative research
that uses verbal descriptions in stating generalizations.
Your goal in conducting quantitative research study is to determine the
relationship between two quantitative variables within a population. Quantitative
research designs are either descriptive (subjects are usually measured once)
or experimental (subjects are measured before and after a treatment). A descriptive
study establishes only associations between variables; an experimental study
establishes causality.
Characteristics of Quantitative Research
• The data is usually gathered using structured research instruments.
• All aspects of the study are carefully designed before data is collected.
• The results are based on larger sample sizes that are representative of the
population.
• The research study can usually be replicated or repeated, given its high
reliability.
• Researcher has a clearly defined research question to which objective answers
are sought.
• Data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often arranged in tables, charts,
figures, or other non-textual forms.
• Project can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future results,
or investigate causal relationships.
• A Researcher uses tools, such as questionnaires or computer software, to collect
numerical data

Kinds of Quantitative Research
According to April Klazema (2014), there are four kinds of quantitative research for
students and researchers. These are the Survey Research, Correlational Research,
Causal-Comparative Research, and the Experimental Research.

A correlational study is a Survey Research uses interviews,

IV. REMEMBER!
• Research is a process or a means of obtaining information to seek solutions to
problems.
• Research is broadly classified either as quantitative or qualitative research.
• The strength of quantitative research lies in its ability to isolate, control, and
manipulate variables adhering to the standards of the scientific method.
• Quantitative or numerical data might not give the entire picture and miss out
some of the contextual details of the research process. This limitation of
quantitative research can be addressed by engaging in qualitative research.
• The four major kinds of quantitative research are Survey Research,
Correlational Research, Causal-Comparative Research and Experimental
Research.
• Experimental Research has two types, True experimental which uses random
sampling and Quasi-experimental which uses intact groups to perform the
experiment.
