COURSE:BSc. DRYLAND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
UNIT:ANSC 460 CAT TWO.
1. Compare and contrast hard pellets vs soft pellets released as a result of feed

digestion in the GIT of a rabbit.

Rabbits usually produces two types of fecal matter which are the hard dry fecal matter
and soft fecal matter which is also known as caecotropes. Caecotrope is also known as
“night feces”.
The similarity between these two is that they are both the end products of digested food
materials. There is also big difference between the two which are
 Hard pellets are usually excreted while soft pellets are eaten immediately as they
emerge from the rabbit anus.
 Caetropes are usually not seen since rabbits usually eat them as they emerge and
hard pellets are always seen.
 Caecotropes have advantage over the hard pellets in that it allows for reabsorption
of nutrient that would have rather been wasted.
 Caecotropes are higher in crude protein levels compared to hard faces. crude
protein levels are due to high content of bacteria.
Rabbit usually start eating the hard pellets ate the age of four weeks and if they go
for long period without eating them they can end up dyeing.
2. Discuss briefly the role of aquaculture in ours Economy.
 Source of income. The main motive behind aquaculture is to sell the fish produced so
as to earn income and hence farmers sell their surplus to earn income in return.
 Provision of raw materials to industries. fish provide cold liver oil for
pharmaceutical industries and also tanning for leather.
 Waste and land utilization or waste land utilization. Residue or kitchen residue
such as kales and carrots which would have been thrown away are used as fish feeds
and hence save the environment. we can also integrate animal’s crops and fish
farming and this utilizes the little land available and is of economic advantage.
 Source of employment to residents. Provides employment both directly and
indirectly i.e. earns foreign exchange when exported people are employed to manage
the fish farms, also in the feed industry. Or in research institutions.
 Provides a better land use alternative. When crops have used up all the nutrients in
the soil ponds can built as a way of rehabilitation or to restore nutrients.
 Source of food. it’s a rich source of protein and available as food throughout the
year.
